The Texas State Bison Herd — direct descendants of the last free-ranging Southern Plains bison rescued by Charles Goodnight in 1878 — roam at large across the park's 15,000 acres, and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department actively manages them as a free-roaming herd, not a fenced exhibit. The Honey Flat Camping Area holds 35 sites with 30/50-amp electric and water hookups, 40-ft cap, year-round; Wild Horse Camping Area is dry-camp. The dump station sits at the entrance. Bison encounters on the loop road and even inside the campground perimeter are documented and routine — TPWD posts standoff distance rules and incident reports. The 64-mile Caprock Canyons Trailway (a converted rail corridor) is the longest state-park trail in Texas. Red dirt and gypsum dust will color every awning fabric.
