A boat is a Rental Vehicle on water. PickRV's R V umbrella covers pontoons, houseboats, day skiffs, and fishing rigs from owner-operators on lakes, rivers, and inshore coastal water across our coverage states.
PickRV opens for bookings on October 25 — owners are listing their rigs now, and every listing goes public on opening day. Pages on this site let you research and plan the trip while that happens.
What R V means here
On water, R V means Rental Vehicle that floats. The category spans flat-water pontoons (family-friendly), houseboats (multi-day vacation rentals — Rent Vacation framing), and small fishing skiffs (day rentals).
What counts as a boat on PickRV
PickRV's boat category covers three sub-types: pontoons (10-22 ft, flat platform, ideal for families on inland lakes), houseboats (30-65 ft, full living quarters, multi-day rentals on big reservoirs and rivers), and fishing skiffs (16-22 ft, center-console or side-console, inshore + lake use).
We do not currently list offshore sportfishers, sailboats, or personal watercraft (PWCs). Coverage will expand as we onboard owner-operators in each segment. We will say so honestly when a category is not yet live.
USCG safety baseline — what every host commits to
Every boat listed on PickRV must carry USCG-required equipment: a wearable life jacket for every person aboard, a Type IV throwable cushion (vessels 16+ ft), a marine fire extinguisher, visual distress signals (depending on waterway), and current navigation lights.
Hosts publish their state boating-safety course requirements on the listing. Many states require a Boater Education Card (NASBLA-approved) for operators born after a state-specific cutoff date. We surface that requirement before you book — not after.
When pontoons make sense vs houseboats vs fishing skiffs
Pontoons are the family default — stable, easy to drive, no swim ladder needed because the deck sits low. Best on inland lakes with light chop. Limited range on a single tank (typically 30-50 miles).
Houseboats double as Rent Vacation lodging — multi-day rentals on Lake Powell, Lake Mead, Lake Cumberland, Norris Lake, and dozens of other reservoirs where the marina culture supports overnight tie-ups. Plan three nights minimum.
Fishing skiffs reward the renter who already knows where to go and what to fish for. A guide-led skiff rental (host as captain) is a separate listing type than bare-boat skiff rental.
What PickRV does not pretend about boat rentals
Boats break down more frequently than cars. Marine engines work hard, salt water corrodes everything, fuel goes bad over winter. We require hosts to publish their most recent service date and engine hours on every listing.
Weather closes boat rentals. PickRV's boat-side cancellation policy includes a weather addendum: an NWS small-craft advisory (or higher) qualifies the booking for a full refund under the weather addendum. Hosts agree to this when they list.
We do not stage photos. The picture on the listing is the actual boat. Where the listing photo includes water that looks calmer or bluer than typical for the lake, the host is required to note it.

The destinations that define the category: Florida (inshore + flats fishing skiffs), Arizona (Lake Powell + Lake Mead houseboats), Tennessee + Kentucky (Norris + Cumberland houseboats), Minnesota (pontoon lake country), and Alaska (coastal-only, with USCG OUPV captain requirements). - Do I need a license to rent a boat from PickRV?
- Most US states require a Boater Education Card (NASBLA-approved online course, $30-50) for operators born after a state-specific cutoff date. Some states require it for everyone regardless of age. Each listing surfaces the requirement before checkout.
- Is the houseboat experience really a vacation rental?
- Yes — that is why we file it under the R V umbrella as Rent Vacation. A houseboat rental is closer to a lake-bound cabin than to a car rental. Multi-day minimums, real kitchen + bathroom, sleeping quarters, marina services.
- What if weather cancels my trip?
- PickRV's boat-side cancellation policy includes a weather addendum. NWS small-craft advisory or higher on the day of your reservation triggers a no-questions-asked full refund. Marina-issued closure overrides any other policy.
- Are guided fishing charters different from bare-boat skiff rentals?
- Yes — bare-boat means you operate the vessel yourself. Charter (or guided) means the host serves as captain and may also serve as your fishing guide. The two list separately on PickRV and the listing type is shown clearly.
- Do you cover offshore sport-fishers or sailboats?
- Not yet. We will add categories as we verify owner-operators with the right insurance + USCG documentation. We will not list categories we cannot vet.
