What R V means here
Off the pavement, R V means Route Vehicle — the rig that opens the trail beyond where your car or RV stops. UTVs (utility task vehicles, also called side-by-sides), ATVs (four-wheeler quads), and trail-rated off-road jeeps fall under this page.
What sub-types the off-road category covers
Two-seat side-by-sides (most common, 60-80 HP, ideal for two-up trail riding). Four-seat side-by-sides (family trail rides). Two-up sport ATVs (single-rider quad, higher skill curve). Trail-rated Jeeps + Broncos (street-legal off-road SUVs for OHV trails that also require road transit).
We do not currently list dirt bikes, snowmobiles, or full rock-crawler buggies. Coverage will expand as we verify owner-operators in each segment.
OHV permits + the regulatory baseline
Most OHV trails on federal land (BLM, USFS) require an OHV sticker — administered per-state or per-forest-district. PickRV's listings surface the required permits and link to the issuing agency for self-purchase. Hosts can pre-load the sticker so the rig is trail-ready at pickup — the listing tells you.
State-specific rules: Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, and California each have separate OHV registration regimes. Each listing makes the local requirements explicit.
Helmet, eye protection, and gloves are mandatory at most rental hosts regardless of state law. We surface what the host requires before you book.
Where the off-road category shines on PickRV

What we do not pretend
Off-road is the most damage-prone rental category there is. Rocks scratch panels, sand abrades engines, mud invades electrical. PickRV does not sell or offer damage coverage — you bring your own; because off-road damage is common, confirm your coverage before you book.
Trail conditions change with weather. A trail that is signature on a dry weekend can be impassable after rain. Hosts maintain trail-condition notes; you are responsible for checking BLM / USFS closure pages before you go.
Cell coverage on most OHV trails is nonexistent. Plan with a satellite messenger (Garmin inReach, Zoleo) for trips beyond a few miles from the trailhead.

Off-road is a niche category and the cohort is small. The catalogue page shows live listings in real time; states activate as we vet operators, and where a region is not live we say so honestly.

Frequently asked
- Do I need an off-road driving license?
- No US state issues a separate off-road driver license, but most require a Boater-equivalent OHV Education Card to operate on public OHV trails. Each state administers its own program. PickRV surfaces the requirement on the listing.
- Are UTVs street-legal?
- Some are, some are not — depends on state. Utah and Arizona allow many UTVs to be registered as street-legal with the right equipment (turn signals, mirrors, license plate). California is more restrictive. Each listing shows the rig's current registration class.
- What if I roll the UTV?
- PickRV does not sell or offer damage coverage — you bring your own coverage, and without it you are on the hook for repair costs up to the host's published replacement value. Helmets and seatbelts are non-negotiable — most rollover injuries are preventable with proper restraint use.
- Can I take it on the highway between trails?
- Only if the rig is street-legal under the state where you are riding. Most side-by-sides require a trailer for highway transit. Some hosts offer trailer + tow vehicle as a bundle.
- What permit do I need for the Moab trails?
- Moab city manages its own OHV permit ($30 daily / $50 weekly) in addition to BLM trail-specific stickers. Check the listing for whether the permit is pre-loaded and for current rates — fees change with the local rec-district budget cycle.
