The North Unit's Juniper Campground is similar at a 35-ft cap, May through September. The two units sit 70 miles apart on I-94 with no connecting park road. Free-roaming feral horse bands — descended from settler stock and managed under a long-running NPS reduction program — are visible in the South Unit's Painted Canyon and Wind Canyon overlooks 80% of summer days per the park's wildlife sighting log. Scenic Loop Drive in the South Unit handles 50-ft rigs but the Juniper Loop in the North Unit narrows for 40-ft+ at the Oxbow Overlook turnaround.
