Isle Royale sits in Lake Superior 56 miles from the Michigan mainland, closes mid-November through mid-April (the park literally closes — gates locked, ferries decommissioned), and has 36 tent-and-shelter wilderness campsites distributed along the 165-mile trail network. There is no road, no car ferry, no RV access of any kind. Mainland RV staging is in Houghton (Ranger III ferry, 6 hours each way), Copper Harbor (Isle Royale Queen IV, 3.5 hours), or Grand Portage MN (Sea Hunter III, 1.5 hours and the only seaplane base). All three mainland gateways have RV-friendly municipal or KOA campgrounds within 5 miles of the dock. The visit itself is backpacking + paddle.
