Flathead County
County seat Kalispell, 5,099 sq mi across Montana. Everything an RV traveler should read before rolling in — where you can boondock, the roads worth the detour, and the local rule that actually matters.

The county in brief
A traveler's read on Flathead County
Going-to-the-Sun Road through Glacier National Park enforces the strictest rig length cap of any major NPS scenic drive in the country — vehicles over 21 ft length OR 8 ft width are physically prohibited between Avalanche Creek and Sun Point, the heart of the scenic corridor and the only practical Logan Pass approach.
Flathead County wraps the western Glacier NP gateway at West Glacier, the Flathead Lake's northern shore (largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi at 191 sq mi surface), and Whitefish Mountain Resort. Kalispell (population 24,558) is the county seat and the only full-service grocery + diesel corridor for any rig staging Glacier's western entrance. The park's vehicle reservation system runs Memorial Day through mid-September and applies separately to Going-to-the-Sun, Many Glacier, and Two Medicine.
