Renting an RV in Custer: what to know before pickup
Custer has its own arrival logistics. Custer State Park Campgrounds handles both the first night and the free dump station. One street-parking ordinance applies to RVs here — cited in full in the arrival guide.
Street parking reality
RVs may not park on residential streets longer than 24 hours; oversized vehicle restrictions in Custer SP entry corridor
Custer Code Title 5
Dump stations & water
- Custer State Park — free, potable water
Camp the first night
- Custer State Park Campgrounds · 4 mi out · Full hookups on some of 339 sites; electric on most
Skip the classic mistake
Trying to access Wind Cave National Park via the Wildlife Loop with rigs over 35 ft
Best window: May through September and late September through early October — green-season window plus…
The Custer window to avoid
November through April — Black Hills snowpack and most park roads closed.
What that mistake costs
Loop has tight corkscrew turns and bison-traffic stops; oversized rigs cautioned
Day one, after you pick the rig up
- Top off propane at U-Haul of Custer, 1100 Mt Rushmore Rd, Custer, SD 57730, on arrival day if tanks read below 30%.
- Drive direct to Custer State Park Campgrounds — Custer Code Title 5 restricts overnight on-street parking in residential zones.
- Verify scenic-drive open status on Wildlife Loop Road (Custer SP) (some seasonal closures).
