White Sands National Park: An RV Traveler's Guide

The gypsum that forms these dunes is unusual: it rarely survives as sand because it dissolves in water, but the closed Tularosa Basin traps it, leaving wave after wave of soft white sand reflecting the desert sky. The effect is otherworldly, especially in the long light of early morning and late afternoon.

Because the park borders an active military range, the entrance road can close temporarily for testing, and hours vary through the year. The white surface also makes the dunefield feel cooler and brighter than a typical desert, which shapes the best times of day to explore.
