Settler colonialism + Indigenous displacement
The honest history
The Oregon Trail and California Trail were primary mechanisms of settler colonialism. Approximately 400,000 settlers migrated west via these routes 1840s-1860s, occupying lands that belonged to Native nations who had not ceded them.
The displacement was violent — both directly through massacres and warfare, and indirectly through resource depletion and disease. The Oregon Trail is American mythology; for the Pawnee, Kiowa, Lakota, Shoshone, Northern Paiute, and many other nations, it was invasion.
Travel with awareness. NPS interpretation has improved on this. Visit with the full history.
