Utah State Route 12 (Scenic Byway 12) runs 124 miles from Torrey to Panguitch through some of the most varied desert and slickrock landscape in the United States. The Federal Highway Administration designated it an All-American Road — the highest tier of scenic byway in the federal program. The road passes through Capitol Reef National Park, the Boulder Mountain section of Dixie National Forest, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and Bryce Canyon National Park. The hogback ridge between Boulder and Escalante is one of the most photographed sections of paved road in the US.

Is Utah Byway 12 RV-friendly?
Yes — the UT-12 mainline has no posted RV restrictions. Class A motorhomes routinely drive the full route. The hogback ridge between Boulder and Escalante is the only section that gives big-rig drivers pause — narrow lanes, no shoulders, drop-offs both sides. But it is fully RV-passable. The route connects three NPS units and a National Monument; campground reservations should be made well in advance.

Segment-by-segment
Torrey to Boulder (about 35 miles): UT-12 climbs out of Capitol Reef area over Boulder Mountain. Cooler, forested, with aspen groves. Boulder is a tiny ranching community — gas + small lodge.
Boulder to Escalante (about 30 miles): the hogback ridge section. The road runs along the spine of a narrow rock ridge with drop-offs both sides. Approaches the famous viewpoints over the Grand Staircase-Escalante NM.
Escalante to Bryce (about 60 miles): the road descends into Grand Staircase-Escalante NM territory. Slickrock landscapes, multiple slot-canyon trailheads, ending at Bryce Canyon National Park.
Panguitch terminus: town of about 1,500 with multiple RV campgrounds. Connects to US-89 for Zion/Grand Canyon onward routes.

What Utah.com + UDOT scenic byway program doesn't tell you
Utah's tourism promotion highlights Byway 12 as a multi-park connector. What is undercovered is the campground reality. Capitol Reef and Bryce have NPS campgrounds (Reserve via Recreation.gov), but they fill 6 months out for summer. Escalante's state-park campground is the underdog — bookable, RV-friendly, less crowded.
The slot-canyon hikes off UT-12 are the secret. Lower Calf Creek Falls, Peek-a-boo Slot, Spooky Slot are all accessible from the highway. None require an RV — drive to trailheads, hike, return to camp.
Tourism promotion also undercovers the winter possibilities. UT-12 stays open year-round. Bryce Canyon in winter is one of the great underrated experiences. Class B campervans handle the winter conditions; Class A motorhomes manage if the heater holds.
