Rent Vacation, solo adventure — Solo-rated PickRV rentals
A solo trip is Rent Vacation at its most personal. PickRV's R V umbrella covers the smaller rigs (vans, compact Class B, Jeeps) sized for one driver and the safety-baseline disclosures (medical, communication, route planning) solo travelers need before they leave.
PickRV opens for bookings on October 25 — owners are listing their rigs now, and every listing goes public on opening day. Pages on this site let you research and plan the trip while that happens.
What R V means here
Solo Rent Vacation removes the negotiation. The rig, the route, the schedule are yours. PickRV's solo cohort is the listings tuned for one-person operation — easy to drive, easy to set up, designed for a single person to manage end-to-end.
What 'solo-rated' means on PickRV
Listings flagged as solo-rated meet four conditions: under 24 ft (so one person can park it), under 11,000 lbs GVWR (no Class A learning curve), automatic transmission, and rear-view camera + side-view camera installed. We surface the filter on the catalogue page.
Solo-rated does not mean the rig is unsafe for couples or families — it means a single person can manage every operational task (setup, breakdown, dumping tanks, parking) without needing a second pair of hands.
Why a solo Rent Vacation rewards different
No negotiation on the route. You drive when you feel like driving, stop when you feel like stopping, sleep when you feel like sleeping.
Photographer's vacation. Dawn at Mesa Arch is a solo trip. Family logistics do not survive 4am wake-up calls; solo travelers do.
Writer's / artist's residency. A week in a van with a notebook on the Oregon coast is a different output than a week in a city.
Recovery + decompression. Solo Rent Vacation is the post-divorce, post-burnout, post-loss trip people take to remember themselves.
Honest safety baseline for solo travelers
Cell coverage drops on most scenic routes. A satellite communicator (Garmin inReach Mini, Zoleo) is the standard recommendation — $15-$25/month for two-way satellite messaging plus SOS. Most solo travelers consider this non-negotiable.
Share your itinerary with one trusted contact. Check in daily. PickRV does not track your location (we are not a surveillance product) — that is your responsibility.
Medical: carry a basic first-aid kit, your prescriptions, and a printed copy of your insurance card. If you have a chronic condition, identify the nearest emergency room at each overnight stop.
Vehicle: read the host's roadside-assistance arrangement before booking. Solo breakdowns are different than family breakdowns — you cannot send a kid for help.
Solo Rent Vacation routes that reward
Pacific Coast Highway south-to-north (San Diego to Astoria) — 1,400 miles, 10-14 days. Slow + flexible.
Utah Mighty 5 + Bryce + Grand Staircase-Escalante — 7-10 days. Photographer's dream.
Vermont / New Hampshire fall foliage — 5-7 days. Writer's pace.
Florida Keys + Everglades + Sanibel — winter season, 7-10 days. Birder + photographer cohort.
Sedona + Flagstaff + Grand Canyon North Rim — 5-7 days. Spring + fall season.
What we honestly do not minimize
Solo travel is not for everyone. Loneliness on day 4 is real. Some solo travelers thrive; some discover after one trip that they prefer a partner or a friend along.
First solo trip should be a route you know. Pacific Coast Highway is forgiving — small towns every 30-50 miles. Death Valley solo is a different risk profile that experienced solo travelers earn through smaller trips first.
Female solo travelers + the campground question — there is no universal answer, and we will not pretend otherwise. Research the specific campground through recent reviews on Recreation.gov and campground-review sites, favor staffed campgrounds with camp hosts for first trips, and trust your read on arrival.
Honest coverage framing
Solo-rated coverage builds as we onboard hosts with the right rig profile. The catalogue page shows live listings in real time; where a region is not live yet, the page says so.

- Is solo RV travel safe?
- Statistically yes — RV travel has lower per-mile incident rates than ordinary highway driving. Solo travel adds practical considerations (medical, communication, breakdown logistics) that the safety-baseline section above covers honestly.
- What if I get a flat tire alone?
- Most rentals include roadside assistance — call the host or the published number, wait for the tow / service. Do not attempt to change a Class C tire alone unless you have done it before; the wheel-and-tire weight is significant.
- Are campgrounds welcoming to solo travelers?
- Most are. RV culture is broadly welcoming — campground neighbors often introduce themselves and share fire-pit conversation. The community is the unexpected upside of solo RV travel.
- Do I get a discount for being one person?
- No. Rig rental is priced by the rig, not by the headcount. Some hosts offer multi-night discounts that benefit longer solo trips.
- What about pets on a solo trip?
- Pet-friendly is a listing-level filter on the catalogue page. Solo + pet is a popular combination. The host's pet policy + fees are on every listing.
