Rent Vacation, multi-generation — Grandparents + parents + kids on PickRV
A multi-generation trip is Rent Vacation organized around the family tree. PickRV's R V umbrella covers the larger Class A motorhomes, fifth-wheels, and small-caravan multi-rig setups that fit grandparents, parents, and kids in the same trip without compromising the privacy each needs.
PickRV opens for bookings on October 25 — owners are listing their rigs now, and every listing goes public on opening day. Pages on this site let you research and plan the trip while that happens.
What R V means here
Multi-generation Rent Vacation is the trip where the rig becomes the family home for two weeks. Grandparents in the master bedroom, parents in the convertible queen, kids in the cab-over bunk and the dinette conversion. PickRV's R V umbrella + the larger rig cohort make it logistically possible.
Why grandparents anchor the best multi-gen trips
Grandparents have time. Most parents work; many grandparents are retired or semi-retired. The trip dates work because grandparents can absorb the schedule that parents cannot move.
Grandparents fund. Many multi-gen trips are gifted by the grandparent generation as a once-in-a-decade family legacy event. PickRV's published pricing makes the budget arithmetic transparent — no surprise fees when you commit.
Grandparents remember. The grandparent generation that grew up RV-traveling in the 1960s-1980s is the demographic that recognizes what a multi-week family RV trip means as a memory bank for the kids.
Rig types for multi-generation trips
Class A motorhome (32-45 ft) — the most space, the master bedroom in the rear, the convertible dinette + sofa-bed in the living area, the cab-over bunk over the cockpit. Sleeps 6-8 comfortably.
Fifth-wheel (32-42 ft) towed by a 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickup — separate bedroom + living area + bunkhouse. Often more interior space than a Class A of similar length. Requires a host who packages the truck + trailer or your own tow rig.
Two-rig caravan — grandparents in a Class B, parents+kids in a Class C, traveling together. Pricier than a single big rig but gives every household its own private quarters at night.
Classic multi-generation routes
Yellowstone + Grand Teton — the iconic American national-park family trip. 10-14 days. Reserve campground 6 months out.
Utah Mighty 5 — 7-10 days. Bryce, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef. The geology is dramatic enough to hold the attention of 7-year-olds and 70-year-olds.
Alaska summer (Anchorage hub + Kenai Peninsula + Denali corridor) — 10-14 days. The most-memorable trip on the list. Requires summer-season booking 6-9 months ahead.
California coast + Sequoia + Yosemite — 10-14 days. Beach + redwoods + Yosemite Valley in one trip.
Florida Keys + Everglades + Sanibel — winter season, 10-14 days. Grandparent-friendly weather; family-friendly snorkeling + bird-watching.
What multi-gen trips actually take to organize
Book 6-9 months ahead. Campground reservations in Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Yosemite, Acadia open 6 months in advance and fill the same day. Class A rentals for peak summer weeks are committed 4-6 months out.
Reserve the campground BEFORE booking the rig. The rig is the easier-to-replace variable. Lock the campground first.
Plan for medication + medical needs of the oldest traveler. Some campgrounds are remote from pharmacies + emergency rooms. Map the medical access for each overnight stop.
Build in rest days. A 14-day trip needs 2-3 stationary days (one campground for 2-3 nights, no driving). Grandparents and toddlers both need them; teenagers tolerate them.
Honest coverage framing for large rigs
The Class A cohort will always be smaller than Class C because Class A hosts are typically single-rig owner-operators. The catalogue page shows live Class A listings in real time; states activate one rig at a time.

- Can grandparents drive a Class A?
- Yes — there is no upper age limit. Most Class A rigs under 26,000 lbs GVWR drive on a standard Class D license. The driving feel is more similar to a school bus than a car — a 30-minute parking-lot familiarization is recommended.
- How many people does a Class A sleep?
- Most Class A coaches sleep 6-8. The master bedroom is one couple; the convertible dinette and sofa-bed are kids or a second couple; the cab-over bunk is kids. Sleeping 8 is technically possible but tight for trips longer than 4 nights.
- What if one traveler has mobility needs?
- Accessibility-modified rigs (ramp access, grab bars, lowered counters) have a dedicated filter on the catalogue page. Coverage is limited; book early when you find one.
- Is a fifth-wheel cheaper than a Class A?
- Generally yes — the rig itself plus a truck rental often total less than a Class A of similar interior square footage. The tradeoff is towing complexity (which the host should walk you through).
- Can we bring two rigs traveling together?
- Yes — caravan-style trips are increasingly popular. Each rig books separately; PickRV's customer support coordinates pickup + return windows. Many campgrounds offer side-by-side sites for caravan bookings.
