What family road trip means on PickRV
A multi-night trip with two or more travelers where the rig is the lodging. The cohort we built the catalogue around: parents with kids age 4-16, grandparents joining, or two families sharing one large rig.
Itinerary length: 5-14 nights is the sweet spot. Shorter than 5 nights barely justifies the setup time. Longer than 14 nights pushes most family travelers past the patience-with-each-other line — itineraries on Pick Your Vacation are tuned for the 5-14 night range.
Why a family Rent Vacation beats hotels
Cost on long trips. Three or four hotel rooms for 10 nights across multiple national parks runs $4,000-$7,000 before food. A Class C rental at $250-$400/night covers the same trip at $2,500-$4,000 with kitchen-cooked meals built in.
Logistics. A hotel trip means packing-unpacking every two nights, restaurant scheduling around children's hunger, and finding lodging within reasonable distance of the next park entrance. The rig collapses all three problems.
Memory density. The kids remember the rig — the bunks, the dining table that converted to a bed, the morning when the rooster outside Cody, Wyoming woke everyone up. Hotels do not produce those memories.
The classic family Rent Vacation routes
Utah Mighty 5 — 7-10 nights, base in Moab + Bryce, 400-mile loop. The most-photographed family RV trip in the US.
California National Parks loop — Sequoia + Kings Canyon + Yosemite. 5-7 nights. Reserve campgrounds 6 months in advance through Recreation.gov.
Florida loop — Everglades + Keys + Disney (RV-friendly Fort Wilderness). 7-10 nights, winter season.
New England fall foliage — Vermont + New Hampshire + Maine. Late September - mid October. Smaller rigs only (Class B + smaller Class C) because the campgrounds and roads are narrower.
Yellowstone + Grand Teton + Glacier — 10-14 nights. The big-Wyoming-Montana trip. Class C or smaller because some campgrounds (especially in Yellowstone) cap at 30 ft.
Budget honest — what a family Rent Vacation actually costs
Rig rental: $200-$400/night for a Class C, less for a travel trailer with your own tow vehicle.
Campgrounds: $30-$70/night for state parks + NPS sites, $50-$120/night for private RV parks with hookups + amenities (pool, laundry).
Fuel: a Class C runs 8-12 MPG. A 2,000-mile trip at 10 MPG costs ~$650 in diesel at $3.25/gallon or ~$700 in gas at $3.50/gallon.
Food: budget 60-70% of what you would spend at restaurants because most meals are cooked in the rig. Stock up at a Costco or large supermarket before leaving the home area.

- What size family fits in a Class C?
- Most Class C rigs sleep 4-6. A 28-32 ft Class C with the cab-over bunk + rear bed + dinette conversion sleeps 6 comfortably for short trips, 4-5 comfortably for longer ones.
- Are kids allowed to sleep in the cab-over bunk?
- Yes — the cab-over bunk is designed for sleeping (not for riding in transit). Children must be in proper car seats / seat belts at designated rear seating positions while the rig is in motion. Each host's rig diagram shows the designated riding seats.
- Is renting an RV really cheaper than flying + hotels?
- Depends on the trip. For 4 people, 10 nights, multiple national parks, driving from a regional hub: usually yes by $2,000-$4,000. For 2 people flying cross-country to a single city: usually no.
- What if a kid gets sick mid-trip?
- Most national-park gateway towns have urgent-care clinics — map the options for each overnight stop before you leave. Cancellation for documented medical reasons follows the published policy.
- Can grandparents drive the rig?
- Yes — there is no upper age limit on rental. The host verifies driver license at pickup. Some hosts require all named drivers to be added to the booking at reservation.
