Couples-getaway rentals lean Rent Vacation hard — the trip is the experience and the rig is the intimacy device. A camper van on the Pacific Coast Highway is a different vacation than a hotel-by-hotel itinerary.
Why couples rent vs hotel
Spontaneity. With a van or small Class B you stop where the view is best. Hotels lock you to a pre-booked location.
Sunrise + sunset access. Park overnight at a campground with a horizon view and the morning starts before the parking-lot light pollution kicks in.
Cost on long trips. A 10-night van trip up the Oregon coast costs $2,500-$3,500 vs $4,000-$6,000 in boutique inns.
Privacy. No housekeeping knocking, no thin walls, no breakfast-buffet small talk.
Rig types tuned for couples
Class B camper van (Sprinter / Transit / ProMaster) — sleeps 2, drives like a tall SUV, parks in standard spots. The default modern answer.
Compact Class C (22-26 ft) — more space than a van, full bathroom, still small enough for most state-park campgrounds.

Pacific Coast Highway, Big Sur stretch — 90 miles, 3-4 days. Plaskett Creek + Kirk Creek USFS campgrounds.
Oregon coast, US-101 — Astoria to Brookings, 5-7 days. State park network is unmatched.
Vermont fall foliage corridor — late September - early October. Backroad cidermills + small inns balance with rig camping.
Joshua Tree + Mojave + Death Valley — winter season, 4-6 days. Stars, silence, no humidity.
Maine Down East coast — Mount Desert (Acadia) + Schoodic + Lubec, 5-7 days. Lobster wharves, fog, granite.
What we honestly do not romanticize
Living in 80 square feet for 10 nights tests relationships. The first night is novelty; the fourth night is when small habits become loud. Plan a rest night halfway through.
Toilet situation in vans is real. A composting toilet works fine; it is not a hotel bathroom. Couples who cannot tolerate the inconvenience should rent a small Class C with a fixed bathroom.
Cell coverage drops in the best spots. Pacific Coast Highway, Big Sur, parts of Oregon, most of Death Valley — no signal. Download offline maps and music before leaving.

- Is a van too small for a 14-night trip?
- Depends on the relationship and the route. Couples who already share small spaces well do fine. Couples who need more breathing room should consider a Class B+ or compact Class C with a separate bed area.
- Can we have a private campsite or do we share?
- Most state and federal campgrounds are individual sites with privacy. Some private RV parks pack sites closer together. The listing + the campground research is yours; PickRV's state pages link to the best sites.
- Can one person drive the whole trip?
- Yes — there is no required second driver. Many couples prefer to share. Both drivers must be added to the booking at reservation.
- Is there enough heat for winter coast trips?
- Most vans + Class B rigs include a propane or diesel heater that handles down to 0°F. Read the listing for the heater type. Winter Vermont and winter Oregon coast are different problems than winter Death Valley.
- Wedding photographers / brand shoots — different rules?
- Commercial use requires a separate rider. Talk to the host before booking. Commercial pricing and insurance differ from vacation rental.
