More on Indiana Dunes National ParkField notes, rig limits by loop, seasons, what to do, quiet spots
Indiana Dunes National Park runs 15 miles along Lake Michigan's southern shore in Porter County, Indiana, protecting roughly 15,000 acres of beaches, living dunes, oak savanna, and wetlands less than 40 miles from downtown Chicago. It is a fragmented park — beaches, trailheads, and the campground are stitched between towns, rail lines, and the still-separate Indiana Dunes State Park. The only in-park camping is Dunewood Campground (67 sites, open April 1 - November 1), reservable six months out on Recreation.gov. Crucially for RVers, Dunewood has no electric, water, or sewer hookups at any site — just a dump station and potable-water spigots. It logged 2,705,209 recreation visits in 2024.
The notes below are PickRV's editorial record. Only the figures in the strip at the top of the page, each with its link and date, were re-read on the park's own pages.

What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
NPS.gov tells you Dunewood has 'limited RV length on some sites' but buries the bigger issue: there are no hookups at all — not even electric — so on a humid July night your AC runs on generator or battery the entire time, and the park publishes no formal generator window, so neighbors lean on the 10pm courtesy quiet hours. Second, the per-site length numbers only live in each individual Recreation.gov campsite page, not the campground overview — book blind and you can land a pad that won't take your rig. Third, the famous 'Three Dune Challenge' and the steepest dune climbs are actually inside Indiana Dunes STATE Park (a separate IN DNR unit with its own gate fee), not the national park — and that State Park campground is your only nearby site with electric hookups. Fourth, Mount Baldy is a literal moving dune (5-10 ft/yr) and its summit is closed or escort-only far more often than the website's front page implies.
Rig limits by loop and road
Length + clearance
- ·Park-wide, our record: 40 ft
- ·Dunewood drive-in sites 1-54: 40 ft — Most back-in pads run ~40ft driveways; several sites are length-limited shorter — check the per-site length on Recreation.gov before booking
- ·Sites 55-67 are tent-only walk-in — no vehicle access
- ·Beach lots (Mount Baldy, Kemil, Central Ave) are sized for cars; West Beach (600 spaces) is the only lot that reliably parks a towed rig
Dump + generator
- ·Dump station: Dunewood Campground (open Apr 1 - Nov 1 only) (Included with $25 site fee)
- ·Generators: Park sets no published generator window — courtesy quiet hours 10pm-6am apply; no hookups means generator or battery is your only power
Seasons and closures
Full season: April 1 - November 1 (Dunewood Campground open; beaches and trails year-round)
Limited access: November 2 - March 31 (no in-park camping; day-use beaches and trails open but lifeguards and shuttle off; lake-effect snow and ice on dune trails)
Known closures:
- ·Mount Baldy summit closed late March - mid-June 2026 for a sand-management project (crews moving ~40,000 cu yd of sand); summit access otherwise is ranger-escort only because it is a moving 'living' dune
- ·Dunewood Campground fully closed Nov 1 - Apr 1 — including the dump station, so do not plan a shoulder-season dump here

Before you rent in Indiana — key local rules
CDL rules start at 26,001 lbs — below that the standard license applies
Indiana BMV requires a CDL only to operate a commercial motor vehicle with GVWR over 26,000 pounds, one designed for 16 or more passengers, or one carrying placarded hazardous materials. A personal motorhome under 26,001 lbs falls outside all three triggers, so a standard operator's license covers it.

Driver's license — or age 15+ with a boater education card — for over 10 hp
To operate a motorboat of more than 10 horsepower in Indiana, the operator must hold a valid driver's license, or be at least 15 years old, have passed a boater education course, and carry an identification card issued by the BMV. Anyone under 15 may not operate a motorboat over 10 hp at all, and an operator of any age who holds a valid driver's license needs no boating certificate.

Hoosier National Forest bans OHVs; ride Redbird or Interlake state areas
OHVs are prohibited on the Hoosier National Forest and may not be operated on any National Forest System land, road, or trail there, including campground roads. Indiana's public riding is at the DNR's Redbird and Interlake Off-Road State Recreation Areas, which require an annual Off-Road Vehicle Trail-Use Permit or a daily trail pass; out-of-state riders can buy one at the gate.
