The Straits of Mackinac themselves are one of the most weather-volatile crossings on the Great Lakes; sudden 30-knot west-to-northwest squalls roll through with under 90 minutes of NWS Gaylord lead time and the marina's harbormaster runs a mandatory weather hold protocol that turns vessels back at the breakwater when sustained winds exceed 25 knots. The marina runs a strict ice-out calendar: April 15 opening (weather-dependent on Straits ice retreat tracked by the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab dashboard) through October 30 closing, with the fuel dock the first system to winterize against ice expansion in early November.
