Cape St. George Light stands on St. George Island along Florida's Gulf Coast 'Forgotten Coast.' The original tower dated to the 1800s but collapsed into the Gulf in 2005; the St. George Lighthouse Association then rebuilt it using thousands of salvaged original bricks, and the reconstructed tower opened to the public in December 2008. A keeper's-house museum beside it tells the story of the light and its keepers.

On the ground
The lighthouse anchors the heart of St. George Island, a slender Gulf barrier island on Florida's quiet 'Forgotten Coast.' When the storm-weakened original toppled into the Gulf in 2005, volunteers salvaged thousands of its bricks, and the St. George Lighthouse Association used them to raise the tower anew — a rare example of a historic light rebuilt from its own salvaged material.
Today the reconstructed tower and the keeper's-house museum beside it draw travelers to a stretch of coast known for uncrowded beaches and clear Gulf water. For RV trips through the Apalachicola Bay area, the island makes a memorable stop; the operating association's site has current climb hours and conditions.
