Cold weather changes how an RV functions. Water freezes, propane pressure drops as temperature falls, batteries lose capacity, and heating systems work harder. Some rigs and some trips are simply not suitable for winter conditions.
This guide uses real temperature thresholds and common equipment limitations rather than general encouragement.
Propane in Cold Temperatures
Propane (the fuel most RVs use for heat, hot water, cooking, and refrigeration) remains in liquid form and produces usable vapor pressure down to approximately -44°F (-42°C) for pure propane. In practice, the usable limit is higher because of tank condition, regulator design, and the fact that many "propane" supplies contain some butane or other mixes.
As temperature drops, the vapor pressure decreases. On very cold days you may notice the furnace or water heater struggling or the flame height on the stove decreasing even when the tank gauge still shows propane remaining. This is because the liquid propane is not vaporizing fast enough to meet demand.
Common mitigations:
- Keep tanks as full as practical (more liquid surface area helps vaporization).
- Park with tanks in the sun when possible.
- Use tank blankets or insulated covers (insulation helps retain what heat is there; it does not generate heat).
- Have the regulator and lines checked if you experience repeated issues. Moisture in the system can freeze at the regulator and block flow even when the tank itself is above the critical temperature.
Do not assume that because the tank is not empty, the appliance will work normally in sub-freezing temperatures.
Water Systems and Freezing
Fresh, gray, and black tanks and all the lines between them can freeze. Once frozen, lines can split, valves can crack, and pumps can be damaged.
Most rental RVs do not come with tank heaters or heat tape as standard equipment. If you plan to camp in freezing conditions, you will need to either:
- Keep the rig in a heated space or use external heat sources aimed at the tanks and exposed lines.
- Winterize the fresh water system with non-toxic RV antifreeze (usually pink propylene glycol based) and drain the tanks and water heater.
- Use the rig only for day use and sleep elsewhere when temperatures are expected to drop below freezing for more than a few hours.
Many people "skirt" the underside of the rig with foam board, tarps, or commercial skirting to reduce heat loss and wind under the tanks. This helps but is not a guarantee against hard freezes.
The water heater must be drained or protected. Most have a bypass kit or winterization valve. Follow the rig-specific procedure rather than guessing.
Heating the Living Space
Most RVs use a forced-air propane furnace. These work in cold weather but consume propane quickly and can struggle to keep up if the rig is poorly insulated, has single-pane windows, or has large slide-out sections with thin floors and roofs.
Supplemental heat can come from:
- Electric space heaters when on shore power (make sure the circuit can handle the load and that you have working CO and smoke detectors).
- Catalytic heaters that use propane (require ventilation and CO monitoring).
- A small wood or propane stove in some rigs (requires proper venting and clearance).
Carbon monoxide risk is real in winter because people close up the rig and run combustion appliances for long periods. Test your CO detectors at the start of every cold-weather trip and never disable them.
Batteries and 12-Volt Systems
Cold reduces battery capacity. A lead-acid battery that performs adequately at 70°F may deliver only 50-70% of that capacity at 30°F and even less at 0°F.
If you are boondocking or dry camping in winter, expect to need more charging input (solar or generator) to replace what the furnace fan, lights, and pumps are drawing. Many factory battery banks are marginal for winter use without upgrades.
Keep batteries charged. A deeply discharged battery in freezing temperatures can freeze and be permanently damaged.
When Not to Travel or Camp
There are conditions where the realistic answer is "do not go" or "do not stay in the rig."
- Sustained temperatures well below the design limits of your water system and tanks with no way to protect or winterize them.
- Roads that are likely to be icy or snow-covered for your entire route, especially if you are not experienced driving a tall, heavy vehicle in those conditions.
- High wind combined with heavy snow or blowing snow that reduces visibility and increases the chance of the rig being pushed or the roof vents being damaged.
- Situations where you cannot reliably heat the space or run the furnace without risking CO buildup or running out of propane far from a refill.
Many experienced winter RVers still choose to use the rig only for travel and day use and stay in hotels, cabins, or friends' homes at night when temperatures are extreme.
Pre-Trip Checks Specific to Cold
- Test the furnace and water heater on propane during the walk-through.
- Confirm you have a working CO detector and at least one smoke detector.
- Know the location of the water heater bypass and low-point drains.
- Carry a basic winter kit: ice scraper, snow brush, traction aids if appropriate for the region, and extra propane if you can transport it safely.
- Check that the tires are properly inflated for the load and temperature (cold air lowers pressure).
Winter RV use is possible in many parts of the country, but it is more work, more expensive in fuel and propane, and has narrower safety margins than summer travel. The rigs most people rent were not built as full-time winter homes. Plan accordingly and be willing to change the plan when conditions exceed what the equipment can handle.
