Driving an RV or towing a trailer changes almost everything about how a vehicle behaves on the road. The vehicle is taller, wider, heavier, and longer than a car or light truck. These differences affect visibility, braking, stability in wind, and the routes you can actually use.
This guide covers the physical realities that matter on public roads and in parking lots. It assumes a typical rented Class C, Class B, or travel trailer setup rather than a 45-foot diesel pusher.
Know Your Exact Dimensions
Before you leave the lot, write down or photograph the following numbers:
- Overall length (bumper to bumper or hitch to rear, including any bike rack or spare tire carrier).
- Overall height (including air conditioners, antennas, and any roof rack). Many rigs sit between 11 and 13.5 feet.
- Overall width (mirrors folded or extended).
- Wheelbase and rear overhang if towing.
These numbers determine which roads, campgrounds, and parking areas are realistic. Many older or scenic roads have height or weight restrictions. Low bridges, tree branches, and gas station canopies become hazards.
Braking and Following Distance
An RV or loaded trailer takes significantly longer to stop than a passenger vehicle. The added mass and different tire compounds mean you need more distance.
A common rule of thumb is to at least double the following distance you would use in a car at highway speeds. In rain, on downgrades, or when the rig is heavy, increase it further. Do not tailgate. Trucks and other RVs can create sudden turbulence or debris.
Practice threshold braking in a safe, empty lot if the host allows it. Know whether the rig has an engine brake, exhaust brake, or trailer brake controller and how to use them without locking wheels.
Wind and Stability
Crosswinds and passing large trucks are the most common causes of unexpected movement. A tall, flat-sided RV acts like a sail. Sudden gusts from the side or the bow wave from a fast-moving semi can push the rig sideways or cause a brief sway if you are towing.
Reduce speed in open areas, on bridges, and when large vehicles are passing. Keep a firm but not death-grip on the steering wheel. If you are towing and feel sway starting, do not slam the brakes. Ease off the accelerator, keep the wheel straight, and let the rig settle. Many modern tow vehicles and some trailers have sway control or trailer stability assist; know whether yours does and what the indicator looks like.
Low Clearances and Overhead Obstacles
Height is the number one surprise for new RV drivers. Gas station canopies, fast-food drive-thrus, older parking garages, and some park entrance stations are lower than they appear. Tree limbs on narrow roads can scrape roofs and air conditioners.
Use a spotter when backing under anything questionable. Many drivers carry a simple measuring stick or use the known height of their rig plus a margin. If you are unsure, find another route or fuel stop.
Bridges, Weight, and Road Limits
Some bridges and mountain passes post weight or length limits. Ignoring them can damage the structure or your rig and can result in fines. State DOT websites and some navigation apps list restrictions, but the signs on the road are the final authority.
When towing, be aware that the combined weight (tow vehicle + trailer + cargo + passengers + fluids) can approach or exceed limits on older bridges even if the individual axle weights are fine. Err on the side of taking a longer but legal route.
Fuel Planning and Station Realities
RVs are not efficient. A typical gas Class C or large tow vehicle may see 6 to 12 miles per gallon depending on load, wind, hills, and driving style. Diesel rigs can do better or worse depending on the model and conditions.
Plan fuel stops around the physical size of the rig. Not every station has lanes that can accommodate a 30-foot vehicle with a trailer. Look for truck stops, large travel centers, or stations with RV lanes. Many have diesel, air, and sometimes potable water.
Do not let the tank get critically low before searching for fuel. Some rigs have limited range once the main tank is below a quarter, and sediment in older tanks can be stirred up when running very low.
Know whether your rig requires regular gasoline, a higher-octane blend, or diesel, and whether it has multiple tanks or a generator that draws from the same supply.
Mirrors, Blind Spots, and Backing
Side mirrors are your primary view. Adjust them before you leave the lot so you can see the sides of the rig and the lane behind. Many RVs have large blind spots directly behind and on the right side (passenger side in the US).
When changing lanes, signal early, check mirrors, and make a deliberate head check. Assume other drivers do not see you.
Backing is where most new drivers feel the most stress. The basic rule for trailers is to turn the wheel in the opposite direction you want the trailer to go while going slowly. Use a spotter with a clear communication plan (hand signals or radios). If you are alone, get out and look frequently rather than guessing.
Practice in an empty lot with cones or lines if possible before you need to back into a tight campsite.
General Road Habits
- Drive at a speed that feels comfortable for the rig and conditions, not the posted limit if conditions are poor.
- Anticipate stops earlier. Downshift or use engine braking on long descents rather than riding the service brakes.
- Watch for low-hanging branches, narrow lanes with no shoulder, and construction zones that squeeze traffic.
- Rest frequently. Fatigue affects judgment more quickly when you are managing a large vehicle.
The goal is not to drive like a car. The goal is to drive the vehicle you actually have, with its real size, weight, and limitations in mind.
