Absorption vs compressor — the architectural difference
Absorption refrigerator (Dometic + Norcold): uses propane heat to circulate ammonia/water through a cooling coil. NO moving parts in cooling unit. Modes: propane, 120V AC, sometimes 12V DC.
Compressor refrigerator (Iceco, Dometic CFX, residential): uses standard compressor (like a kitchen fridge). Modes: 120V AC, 12V DC (for 12V compressor units), residential is 120V only.
Most factory-installed RV refrigerators are absorption (80% per RVIA industry data). Most aftermarket replacements + boondocking-optimized rigs use 12V compressor.

Power consumption per mode (real data)
Absorption refrigerator on propane: ~0.7-1.0 lbs propane per day = ~$0.50-0.70/day fuel cost. 30-lb tank lasts 30-40 days fridge-only.
Absorption refrigerator on 120V AC: 300-400 W continuous = 7-10 kWh/day. At $0.12/kWh shore power, ~$0.85-1.20/day.
Absorption refrigerator on 12V DC: 25-30 Amps continuous (very inefficient) = 600-720 Ah/day. Drains a 100Ah battery in 4 hours. AVOID 12V mode for absorption fridges except briefly during driving (alternator charge).
12V compressor refrigerator: 4-6 Amps continuous = 50-80 Ah/day at 12V. Manageable with 200-400 Ah lithium bank + 200-400W solar.
When to use propane mode
Use propane when: boondocking, no shore power, no/limited solar, generator off.
Pros: no battery drain, low operating cost, works indefinitely if propane supplied.
Cons: only ~80°F ambient cooling capacity (struggles in 95°F+ heat), MUST be level within 3° (off-level kills cooling unit), small CO output, propane consumption.
Caveat: Absorption fridges MUST be level within 3° in operation. Off-level for >2 hours = cooling unit shutdown, often permanent. Use leveling blocks + a bubble level on the fridge floor.
When to use 120V AC mode
Use 120V AC when: shore power connected (campground), generator running.
Pros: best cooling performance (higher BTU output than propane mode), no propane consumption, fastest cool-down.
Cons: must have shore power or generator. Ties to RV park or running generator.
When to use 12V DC mode (absorption fridges only)
Use 12V DC ONLY when: driving (alternator charges battery faster than fridge drains).
When stopped: switch immediately to propane or 120V. 12V mode at rest drains battery in 4 hours.
Most modern RV refrigerators auto-switch between modes via AES (Auto Energy Select) circuit. Verify in your owner's manual.
12V compressor refrigerator strategy
Different paradigm: 12V compressor fridges (Iceco, Dometic CFX 12V, Norcold N3) run continuously on 12V DC at 4-6 Amps. No mode switching needed.
Power consumption ~50-80 Ah/day = manageable with 200W+ solar + 200Ah+ lithium.
Most efficient mode for boondocking. Larger battery bank + solar pays back in 2-3 years vs propane consumption.
Pre-cool strategy (the trick that doubles boondocking range)
Pre-cool the fridge on 120V AC for 24 hours BEFORE departure. A cold fridge stays cold longer than a freshly-loaded warm fridge.
Load with already-cold food + drinks (chilled in home fridge). Avoid loading warm/hot food + drinks (they raise fridge temperature for hours).
Stock with frozen 2L water bottles. They act as thermal mass + free up freezer space as they thaw.
Open fridge minimum times (briefly, take all needed items at once). Each opening = 30 sec to recover temperature.
What manufacturer manuals + RV YouTubers don't tell you
Under-shared truth #1: absorption refrigerator cooling capacity drops 30-50% in hot weather (above 95°F ambient). Per Dometic + Norcold spec sheets, rated cooling at 70°F ambient. In Phoenix summer, your fridge struggles to maintain 40°F internal. Add a $30 cooling fan kit (mounts on cooling coil) to recover 20-30% capacity.
Under-shared truth #2: 12V mode on absorption fridges is for DRIVING ONLY. Leaving 12V mode on overnight drains house battery in 4 hours. Modern RVs with AES (Auto Energy Select) auto-switch — verify yours is enabled in the fridge control panel.
Under-shared truth #3: 'pre-cooling' the fridge for 24 hours before departure is the single highest-leverage boondocking trick. A cold fridge with cold contents holds temperature 2x longer than a freshly-loaded warm fridge. Cuts propane consumption ~30% on first day of boondocking.
