Independence Mine Ghost Town: An RV Traveler's Guide

Independence Mine State Historical Park sits high at Hatcher Pass in the Talkeetna Mountains of Alaska's Mat-Su region, an abandoned hard-rock gold-mining camp now preserved by Alaska State Parks. Weathered bunkhouses and mine buildings spread across an alpine basin north of Palmer, reached by a paved scenic road. It is one of the most accessible preserved mining camps in Alaska and an easy add to a Mat-Su RV trip.
When can you visit the Independence Mine ghost town?
The park's visitor center operates in summer — the Alaska State Parks page lists it open daily from about June 18 through September 30 — with guided historical tours during that window. The high alpine setting means the access road and services are seasonal, so confirm current hours and road status with Alaska State Parks before you go.

Independence Mine preserves the remains of an alpine hard-rock gold operation that once cut tunnels into the mountains above Hatcher Pass. Today Alaska State Parks maintains the camp as a state historical park where visitors can walk among the surviving bunkhouses, shops, and mine structures spread across the basin.
The Alaska State Parks page notes the park is operated with guided historical tours, a summer visitor center open daily from about June 18 to September 30, an assay office with displays explaining assaying and other mining techniques, and the chance to pan for gold on site.
Because it sits high in the Talkeetna Mountains, the season is short and weather-driven. Check the Alaska Division of Parks page for current visitor-center hours, tour availability, and road conditions over Hatcher Pass before planning your visit.
