Shawnee National Forest is the only federally-designated national forest in Illinois — 280,000 acres in the Shawnee Hills of southern Illinois, a geological anomaly where the Wisconsin glaciation stopped just north of the region and left a hilly Ozark-adjacent landscape that more closely resembles Missouri than the Illinois prairie.
Garden of the Gods Recreation Area inside the Shawnee NF holds Pennsylvania-era sandstone rock formations and a small dispersed-RV-friendly USFS campground. Jackson County wraps Carbondale (population 21,857, home of Southern Illinois University), the western Shawnee NF approach, and the Mississippi River floodplain at Grand Tower. Giant City State Park accepts rigs to 35 ft with electric hookups.
