IL · State tax dossier · 2026 · State-published rate
Illinois has a marketplace facilitator law, which makes the platform the collector once that platform is registered in the state. PickRV is not registered in Illinois today, so it adds no tax line at checkout and remits nothing here. Any Illinois tax due on the rental stays the host's own responsibility to report and pay — Illinois — Local Sales Tax Rates is who confirms what applies. This is information, not tax advice.

Where you land depends on the county your trip starts in
6.25–11.5%

Worked example
A sample 5-night rental at an example $100/night rate — hosts set their own nightly price. The tax line is the range the state itself publishes, so the total is a range too — we would rather show you both ends than invent a point between them. What Illinois's own tax would add. PickRV is not registered here, so it does not add this to your booking.

What hosts get caught by
Chicago's 9% Personal Property Lease Transaction Tax stacks on top of state + city sales tax — total can reach ~19% on a Chicago RV rental
Chicago Municipal Code §3-32 imposes a 9% lease transaction tax on personal property rented within city limits, in addition to the 10.25% combined state + city + county + Cook County sales tax. Total tax on a Chicago RV rental approaches 19%. Hosts marketing Chicago rentals must collect both — the LTT is filed separately from the sales tax return via the City of Chicago Business Affairs portal.
Primary source ↗(opens in new tab)Illinois enforces dust suppressant / weight restrictions seasonally on county roads in the southern third of the state
From March 1 through May 15 most southern Illinois counties (Hardin, Pope, Massac, Alexander) enforce a frost-law axle-weight cap of 7 tons per axle on county roads. A Class A motorhome at 24,000 lbs GVWR with the rear tag axle deflated trips the limit. Hosts marketing Shawnee National Forest trips in spring need to specify approach via state highways only.

Frequently asked
Yes. Illinois — Local Sales Tax Rates publishes a combined state + local sales tax of 6.25–11.5% on rentals. PickRV has not yet verified how that splits between Illinois and its counties, so we quote the state's own figure rather than one of our own. PickRV is not registered in Illinois, so it collects no tax on these bookings; the obligation stays with the host.
Illinois's marketplace facilitator law makes a registered platform the collector on bookings it processes. It will apply to PickRV once PickRV registers in Illinois. That has not happened yet, so no PickRV booking carries a Illinois tax line today and the host remains responsible for whatever the state requires — confirm with Illinois — Local Sales Tax Rates. We have not yet finished citing the specific Illinois section here, and we do not publish a citation we have not checked — Illinois — Local Sales Tax Rates is the authority to confirm it with.
We have not verified whether Illinois levies a per-day rental surcharge on RVs, so this page does not claim either way — several states apply one to cars and expressly exempt RVs, which is exactly the kind of detail worth confirming with Illinois — Local Sales Tax Rates rather than guessing.
PickRV adds no Illinois tax line to a booking today, so there is no PickRV-collected tax to refund. PickRV's platform floor gives a full refund of what you paid when you cancel at least 48 hours before pickup (the default host tier is Moderate; no tier can go below the floor). Cancel closer in and the refund follows the band schedule on the cancellation policy page.
