The county in brief
A traveler's read on Dare County
Seventy miles of fragile barrier-island sand under Cape Hatteras National Seashore make this the only NPS-managed barrier island chain on the US East Coast with continuous through-road access — NC-12 runs the entire length from Whalebone Junction at the northern end to the Ocracoke Inlet ferry crossing at the south, and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States at 198.5 ft, was famously moved 2,900 feet inland in summer 1999 to escape eroding surf, an NPS engineering feat that lifted the entire 4,400-ton structure onto rollers and rolled it slowly across a steel-tracked path over 23 days. At 10:35 a.m. on 17 December 1903 the first powered, controlled, sustained heavier-than-air human flight took off from a wooden launch rail at Kill Devil Hills inside Dare County; the Wright Brothers National Memorial preserves the original launch and landing markers in a granite-pylon monument with the flight distances precisely recorded (120 ft for the first flight, lasting 12 seconds).
Dare County wraps the Outer Banks from northern Currituck Banks (4WD-only, no paved road) to ferry-accessed Ocracoke at the southern end. Oregon Inlet Campground inside CHNS accepts rigs to 35 ft on reservation through recreation.gov 6 months ahead; Frisco and Ocracoke campgrounds are the alternative loops, all open seasonally per the CHNS Foundation Document and all subject to the 14-day max-stay rule. Bodie Island Lighthouse (1872) and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (1870) both offer climbing tours April through October — Cape Hatteras was closed 2023-2025 for full structural rehabilitation. The barrier-island vulnerability to nor'easters and hurricanes regularly closes NC-12 at the New Inlet washover; check Dare County Emergency Management before committing to the corridor.
