Six miles of pavement ending at an unfinished tunnel mouth — the so-called Road to Nowhere (officially Lakeview Drive, NPS-maintained) is the literal monument to a 1943 federal promise that has never been kept: when the Tennessee Valley Authority's Fontana Dam flooded NC-288 and isolated half a dozen rural Swain County communities along the north shore of Fontana Lake, the federal government signed a 1943 settlement agreement promising to build a replacement road around the lake's north shore so descendants could visit the family cemeteries left behind. The Park Service began construction in 1959, ran out of funding partway through, and abandoned the project at the tunnel mouth in 1972; Swain County eventually negotiated a $52 million cash settlement in 2010 in lieu of the road. The unfinished tunnel today is a popular bicycle and pedestrian access point into the GSMNP backcountry, and the road remains the only NPS-maintained scenic spur in Swain County.

Swain County's 528 sq mi hold the western 60% of Great Smoky Mountains National Park — the most-visited national park in the United States at 13.3M recreation visits in 2023 per NPS Visitor Use Statistics — including Clingmans Dome at 6,643 ft (the highest summit in Tennessee, the third-highest peak east of the Mississippi after Mount Mitchell and Mount Craig, both in North Carolina). The Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians' Qualla Boundary reservation occupies the southeastern corner of the county, with Cherokee (population 1,978) the tribal capital and the GSMNP's southern entrance. Smokemont Campground inside GSMNP accepts rigs to 40 ft year-round on reservation through recreation.gov 6 months ahead. Deep Creek Campground (rigs to 25 ft) is the alternative GSMNP base inside Swain County. Bryson City (population 1,424, the county seat) sits at the Nantahala River put-in for the Nantahala Outdoor Center's whitewater rafting and ziplining operations. Nantahala National Forest's Nantahala Ranger District permits 14-day dispersed camping at signed sites with rigs to 30 ft.
