RV travel guide
Custer County
County seat Challis, 4,938 sq mi across Idaho. Everything an RV traveler should read before rolling in — where you can boondock, the roads worth the detour, and the local rule that actually matters.

The county in brief
A traveler's read on Custer County
Custer County's Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness at 2.4 million acres is the largest contiguous forest wilderness in the contiguous US, larger than Yellowstone NP plus Grand Teton NP combined — a roadless backcountry where the Salmon River's Main and Middle Forks drain northwest through a granite canyon system that has no road crossings between the Idaho-Oregon line and the headwaters at Stanley.
Challis (population 1,000) is the county seat at the confluence of the Salmon River and Garden Creek. Mount Borah at 12,668 ft is Idaho's high point and rises directly from Custer County's Lost River Range. Stanley Lake and Redfish Lake (in adjacent Blaine and Custer county boundary) anchor the most photographed Sawtooth views.
