Four fish species evolved here and exist nowhere else on Earth — the Bear Lake whitefish (Prosopium abyssicola), Bonneville whitefish (Prosopium spilonotus), Bonneville cisco (Prosopium gemmifer), and Bear Lake sculpin (Cottus extensus) all evolved in isolation in Bear Lake during the Pleistocene when the lake was a separate basin within the much larger ancestral Lake Bonneville system, and all four remain endemic to this single 109-sq-mi lake straddling the Idaho-Utah border. The lake's brilliant turquoise water — colored by suspended limestone microparticles refracting blue wavelengths — earned the 'Caribbean of the Rockies' nickname from Idaho Tourism, and the visible-spectrum effect is most intense in mid-July when surface temperatures finally cross 70°F and stratification stabilizes per Utah State University Bear Lake Limnological Field Station seasonal data.

Bear Lake reaches 208 ft maximum depth and is one of the few large North American lakes without a major surface inlet — most inflow comes via the Mud Lake/Dingle Swamp wetland complex on the north shore that filters Bear River water through 16,000 acres of marsh before delivery, the natural sediment-trap that keeps the lake clear. Bear Lake State Park's Eastside campground (Idaho-side, north of St. Charles) accepts rigs to 40 ft with electric hookups across 47 sites May through September per Idaho Parks reservation system; Utah operates a separate state park on the southern shore at Garden City.
