First, the City of Knoxville zoning code does not allow recreational vehicles to be occupied while parked on residential lots — overnighting in a friend's driveway is a code violation, not a courtesy. Second, every vehicle stopped longer than 15 minutes inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) must display a Park-It-Forward tag: 5 dollars daily, 15 dollars weekly, 40 dollars annual, with enforcement active every day in 2026.

Third, if your rig measures over 30 feet, US-129 through Deals Gap (the Tail of the Dragon) is closed to you by TDOT order — TN-72 and US-321 are the legal routes around the south end of the park.

Layer on the Cades Cove vehicle-free Wednesdays (May 6 through Sep 30, 2026), the Big Ears Festival downtown lockdown (Mar 26-29), and August thunderstorm windows that flood the Tennessee River greenways, and Knoxville becomes a city where your first 24 hours are about reading the calendar, not the scenery.

Best season to come

Late April through early June: GSMNP wildflower bloom, daytime highs 70-80F, low storm probability, Cades Cove Wednesdays just starting (May 6 onset), and campground rates haven't hit July peak yet.

Season to skip

Late July through mid-August: afternoon thunderstorms flood Tennessee River greenways and Smokies trailheads, dew points push 75F+ making A/C run constant on 30A pedestals, and any home-football weekend in Sep-Nov collapses lodging supply within 25 mi.

Parking ordinances that bite RVs

Recreational vehicles shall not be occupied while parked or stored on residential lots; storage allowed only in side or rear yards behind the front building line, not on public streets long-term.

If your rig is over 30 ft, lock in your Smokies south-loop route as US-321 / TN-72 — do NOT route GPS via US-129 Deals Gap (illegal + no turnaround for 11 miles)

Dump tanks at Pilot/Flying J Lovell Road (314 Lovell Rd) BEFORE setting up at Townsend KOA — dump access at the KOA itself is reserved for departing guests
Refill propane at U-Haul Clinton Hwy (5980 Clinton Hwy) — only Knoxville propane location with reliable Sunday hours and a pull-through bay

Check the day of week — if it is Tuesday or Wednesday in May-Sept, do NOT plan Cades Cove Loop; reroute to Cataloochee Valley or Foothills Parkway overlook

Download the GSMNP offline map before leaving I-40 — cell coverage drops at Townsend Wye and stays dead through Cades Cove

The mistake renters make

Avoid this trap

Routing a 30 ft+ rig over US-129 Deals Gap ('Tail of the Dragon') because a tourist map shows it as a Smokies shortcut. Signs at both approaches enforce a 30-foot maximum length set by TDOT in 2014 after 204 crashes (6 fatal) over 24 months on the 11-mile stretch.

Tennessee Highway Patrol issues commercial-vehicle citations on this corridor and there is no turnaround for 11 miles — if you commit and jackknife, recovery tow from Deals Gap regularly runs $1,500-$3,000 plus the citation. North Carolina mirrors the ban on its side, so you cannot exit east either.
