Great Smoky Mountains Loop

On a single October 2024 weekend, rangers turned away more than 45 oversized commercial vehicles trying to climb Newfound Gap Road; that same 24 hours produced a car-hauler that crashed into a wall and slid down an embankment, plus a semi whose brakes caught fire on the descent (National Parks Traveler, Oct 2024 reporting on the NPS closure). The road they were trying to use is exactly the road this loop drives, and the reason matters: two lanes, an 8% grade that runs for eight miles out of Cherokee, no truck escape ramps, and tight switchbacks where a 40-foot wheelbase tracks wider than the painted lane. The Smokies are not gentle on big rigs. Three constraints shape the rest of the planning. Smokemont caps motorhomes at 40 feet and trailer combos at 35; Elkmont drops that to 35 and 32; Cades Cove holds at 40 and 35 (NPS campground regulations). Six interior roads — Roaring Fork, Rich Mountain, Heintooga Ridge, Balsam Mountain, Greenbrier past the ranger station, and the Metcalf Bottoms exit — flatly prohibit RVs, trailers, and buses. And every parked vehicle inside the boundary needs a tag: $5 daily, $15 weekly, $40 annual, displayed on the dash within 15 minutes of stopping.
Best window
Mid-September through late October. Foliage peaks around the third week of October at Newfound Gap, daytime highs sit in the 60-70F range, and the Cades Cove Wednesday vehicle-free closures (which run May through September per NPS) have ended, so the 11-mile loop is open every day to RV traffic at sunrise.
Avoid window
July 4 weekend and the first two weeks of August. Lowland heat pushes mid-90s in Gatlinburg, Cades Cove Loop becomes stop-and-go for 3-4 hours at peak, every Wednesday is closed to vehicles for cyclists, and the August 2025 storm damage on Newfound Gap (Walker Camp Prong undermined ~125 feet of pavement) is a reminder that summer convective storms can shut the spine of the park overnight.
What official guides do not tell you
Newfound Gap Road bans commercial vehicles and punishes oversized rigs
Per the National Park Service and corroborated by National Parks Traveler reporting on the October 2024 closure event, Newfound Gap Road is a two-lane mountain road with continuous 8% grades, no truck lanes, and no runaway ramps. It is closed to commercial vehicles. Recreational RVs up to roughly 30 feet handle it fine in dry weather; longer rigs scrape overhanging branches in the lower switchbacks and risk brake fade on the six-mile descent into Gatlinburg.

NPS publishes hard caps that recreation.gov enforces at booking: Smokemont allows motorhomes to 40 feet and trailer combinations to 35; Elkmont caps motorhomes at 35 and trailers at 32; Cades Cove permits 40 and 35. All three require reservations year-round, allow a maximum 14 consecutive days, prohibit generators 8 pm to 8 am, and limit each site to two vehicles or one vehicle plus trailer.

Since the Park It Forward program launched, every vehicle parked anywhere in the park for longer than 15 minutes must display a physical parking tag on the dash. Rates are $5 daily, $15 weekly, $40 annual. Digital screenshots are not accepted; trailhead kiosks are sparse, so buy and print before you leave the campground. Frontcountry campers do not need a tag while parked at their assigned site, only when stopping elsewhere.

NPS lists these as restricted: Balsam Mountain Road, Greenbrier Road past the ranger station, Heintooga Ridge Road, Rich Mountain Road, Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, and the road exiting at Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area. Caution is also advised on Little River Road between Townsend and Elkmont and on the access into Cataloochee Valley. Trying to back a 30-foot Class C out of Roaring Fork is the most common avoidable mistake in the park.

The 11-mile, one-way Cades Cove Loop Road is closed to motor vehicles each Wednesday from May through September to allow walking and cycling. Outside that window the loop is open sunrise to sunset daily. RVs are permitted but expect 3-4 hour transit times in peak season; use only paved pullouts to stop for wildlife.
