Outer Banks Cape Hatteras: 5-Day NC Coast

The Cape Hatteras run is decided before you leave Manteo: the NPS pad at Oregon Inlet Campground is built for 40 ft of trailer but routes a second vehicle out to auxiliary parking past 25 ft, and the free Hatteras-Ocracoke vehicle ferry runs first-come first-served across Hatteras Inlet on a 70-minute crossing - no length reservation for the short hop, but the longer Ocracoke-Cedar Island and Ocracoke-Swan Quarter runs charge $10 to $45 per vehicle by length and take reservations 90 days out. Plan three other hard constraints into the week: the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse tower stays closed to climbing through the end of 2026 (grounds open), Bodie Island Lighthouse climbing runs April 22 to October 12, 2026 with day-of tickets only, and beach driving south of the Marc Basnight Bridge requires a $50 ten-day Cape Hatteras ORV permit purchased through recreation.gov before you air down. This 5-day, ~270-mile loop from Manteo to Ocracoke and back uses NPS and KOA pads only, every fee and pad limit cited to the source.

Elevation profile? Barely anything — but tide and dune are the real verticals: The highest dry ground on the entire 5-day route is the crown of the Marc Basnight (Bonner) Bridge replacement deck at 90 ft above the inlet, per NCDOT bridge specs. Every NPS campground sits at 4-10 ft above mean sea level. The barrier-island geometry means a single nor'easter can dump 18-24 inches of saltwater across NC-12 between Rodanthe and the Pea Island visitor center — the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office tracks recurring overwash events at MP 26.8, 38.5, and 41.2 of NC-12. Buxton's Cape Point sits at 8 ft above mean tide and was closed by ocean overwash 14 separate days during 2024 (NPS CAHA monthly reports). Length and width — pad caps tighter than the brochure: Oregon Inlet NPS lists 120 sites; the published 40-ft pad is misleading because the loop access road has a 24-ft tight-turn radius at the entrance to the C and D loops. A 30-ft Class C fits; a 35-ft fifth-wheel will hit a power pedestal. Cape Point NPS allows 40 ft on the outer loop but the C loop near the bathhouse caps at 25 ft hitch-to-bumper per NPS site listings. Frisco NPS has 60 sites with no length cap published but the dune access road has 11 ft 6 in posted clearance at one duneline cut. Ocracoke NPS handles up to 40 ft on the front loop and 30 ft on the back. KOA Rodanthe accepts up to 75 ft on big-rig pull-throughs. Seasonal window — shoulder season is the only real answer: September 15 through October 25 is the cleanest window. Hurricane peak (NOAA NHC climatology) is September 10, but the back half of September into mid-October produces 76-82 F daytime, low humidity, sub-25 kt prevailing winds, and beach driving sand that compacts hard at 18-20 psi. Late April through Memorial Day is the second window: water still cold (62-66 F), but the bugs are tolerable and the ORV beaches are not yet shoulder-to-shoulder. Avoid late June through mid-August unless you have a confirmed campground — KOA Rodanthe books out 8 months ahead for July, and the Cape Hatteras KOA holds a 92% summer occupancy per NCDOC tourism stats. Avoid late October through mid-March for nor'easters; NC-12 closures average 11 events per year (NCDOT Ferry Division alerts).

Fuel stops along NC-12, the single road south: From Manteo, full fuel at the Sheetz at Roanoke Island; next is Nags Head (multiple Wawa, Shell, BP at MP 11-12 on US-158). Once you cross the Basnight Bridge, fuel options thin to one station per village: Rodanthe (Shell), Avon (BP and Conoco), Buxton (Exxon at the lighthouse turn), Hatteras Village (Shell at the ferry dock). On Ocracoke, only the Variety Store / Marathon at the harbor and Jason's Restaurant Marathon mid-island. Diesel is available at the Avon BP and Hatteras Village Shell only — no diesel on Ocracoke. Carry 5-10 gallon spare jerry cans if running a generator-heavy rig.

Cell coverage — Verizon dominates, AT&T patchy, T-Mobile sparse: Verizon mid-band runs strong from Manteo through Buxton with reliable 5G at all four NPS campgrounds. AT&T has full bars at Oregon Inlet and Buxton but drops to LTE only at Cape Point and intermittent at Ocracoke. T-Mobile users report 0-1 bar south of the Basnight Bridge through mid-Hatteras Island; functional service returns near the Hatteras ferry terminal. Starlink works at every campground with a clear southern sky. NPS rangers monitor VHF marine channels for emergencies, but cellular is the practical lifeline.

Water and dump stations, NPS-only options: All four NPS campgrounds (Oregon Inlet, Cape Point, Frisco, Ocracoke) have potable water spigots at every site and one dump station per loop, free to registered campers. The non-NPS dump options on the route are KOA Rodanthe ($10 non-guest dump) and Frisco Woods Campground ($15). No public dumps exist between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe — plan a top-off at Oregon Inlet before the bridge and a final dump at Ocracoke before the ferry north.
