Blue Ridge Parkway: 7 Days Front Royal to Asheville

Lowest tunnel clearance on the Blue Ridge Parkway: 11 feet 7 inches at Big Witch (MP 461.2, NPS). Lowest on Skyline Drive: 12 feet 8 inches at Mary's Rock. Total tunnels on the route: 26. Parkway speed limit: 45 mph; Skyline Drive: 35 mph. Commercial vehicles: prohibited without Asheville HQ permit. NPS-operated campgrounds with electric hookups: zero. Average dump station per loop: one. Reservation window: 6 months on Recreation.gov. 2026 NPS season: May 22 - October 25. Black Mountain Campground (Pisgah NF): the practical RV base for Mt. Mitchell, because Mt. Mitchell State Park Campground is closed through 2026 for waterline work. Linville Gorge dispersed: Friday-Saturday Recreation.gov permit required May-October. From these constants the seven days plot themselves — north-to-south along the elevation contour, parking the rig at NPS or USFS loops by mid-afternoon, day-tripping the high country in a tow vehicle. Measure with the AC installed before any of the bookings open; everything else follows from height.

Elevation profile, peak to valley: the Parkway is the highest sustained motor route east of the Mississippi. Skyline Drive opens at Front Royal at 600 ft and climbs steadily to Skyland at 3,680 ft (NPS Shenandoah profile). Hand-off at Rockfish Gap drops to 1,909 ft, then the Parkway climbs the Blue Ridge Plateau through Peaks of Otter (2,525 ft) and Mabry Mill (2,855 ft). The real altitude begins in North Carolina: Doughton Park sits at 3,710 ft, Julian Price at 3,400 ft, Linville Falls at 3,250 ft. The Parkway's published high point is Richland Balsam at MP 431.4: 6,047 ft (NPS), and Waterrock Knob nearby reaches 6,400 ft on the trail. Asheville staging at 2,134 ft is the route's lowest sustained elevation. Spruce-fir forest begins around 4,500 ft, the elevation where black bear density also peaks per NCWRC data. Coolant temps and brakes both work harder on the southern section than on Skyline Drive — the Linn Cove Viaduct (MP 304) descent into Linville drops 1,200 ft in 8 miles at 7% grade.

Length and clearance, tunnel by tunnel: Skyline Drive has one tunnel, Mary's Rock at 12 ft 8 in posted edgeline (NPS). The Parkway south of Roanoke has 25 tunnels. Northern Parkway tunnels are generous: Bluff Mountain (MP 53.1) at 14 ft 4 in, Rough Ridge (MP 349) at 13 ft 9 in. Southern Parkway is where height matters — Lickstone Ridge (MP 458.8) at 11 ft 8 in, Bunches Bald (MP 459.3) at 12 ft 3 in, Big Witch (MP 461.2) at 11 ft 7 in at the edge stripe. NPS lane width is 11 ft per lane, so a 13-ft-high rig that ducks the centerline of a tunnel can clear, but crossing the centerline is an NPS violation regardless of oncoming traffic. Pad lengths at the seven NPS campgrounds along the route: Big Meadows accepts up to 35 ft, Otter Creek 30 ft on inner loop and 40 ft outer, Peaks of Otter 30 ft, Julian Price 25 ft (B and C loops) to 40 ft (A loop), Linville Falls 30 ft, Crabtree Falls 25 ft, Mount Pisgah 35 ft. Black Mountain Campground (Pisgah NF) accepts up to 30 ft. No NPS site on the parkway is rated above 40 ft.

Seasonal window — fall foliage cascades by elevation: the textbook window is October 5 through October 25. Above 5,000 ft (Richland Balsam, Waterrock Knob, Graveyard Fields) peaks the first week of October. The 3,500-4,500 ft band (Julian Price, Linville Falls, Mount Mitchell access) peaks October 12-18. The 2,000-3,500 ft band (Peaks of Otter, Mabry Mill, Otter Creek) holds peak into late October. NPS Parkway Fall Color updates run twice a week through the season. Avoid January through March — NPS routinely closes long sections for ice and rockfall; Graveyard Fields, Mt. Pisgah, and most NC tunnels are gated. Late spring (May-June) is wildflower-bright but Helene-recovery work continues to affect MP 317.5 to MP 355.3 with detours through US-221 and NC-226A.

Fuel and resupply — exit at the right milepost: the Parkway itself has no gas pumps, but spaced spur exits give every rig a refuel within 100 miles. Front Royal (Wawa, Sheetz, multiple). US-211 at Thornton Gap (Sperryville, Exxon). Lexington at I-64 (Sheetz, Costco). Buchanan at US-501 (Marathon, Sunoco). Roanoke at Mill Mountain exit (every brand off I-581). Floyd at US-221 (BP, Citgo). Sparta NC at US-21 (Murphy USA at Walmart). Boone at US-321 (Sheetz, BP, Costco). Marion at I-40 (Pilot Flying J, Love's). Asheville at Tunnel Road (every brand). South of Mt. Pisgah, the only practical fuel is the Cherokee BP (off US-441 at MP 469) — top off at Mt. Pisgah Gift Shop diesel before the southern tunnel run. Diesel availability is excellent at the I-81 and I-40 corridor exits, thin at the small-town spurs.

Cell coverage — uneven by ridgeline: Verizon has the strongest coverage across the route, with reliable bars at Big Meadows, Peaks of Otter, Julian Price, and Mount Pisgah. AT&T performs well in the central Virginia section but drops to 0-1 bar from MP 290 to MP 320 (Doughton to Julian Price plateau) and from MP 410 to MP 460 (Pisgah to Cherokee tunnels). T-Mobile is the weakest carrier on the parkway with extended dead zones across all NC high country. Cell signal at the high overlooks (Richland Balsam, Waterrock Knob) is reliable on Verizon and inconsistent on AT&T due to the spruce-fir canopy. Water and dump stations — count them and plan: NPS campgrounds with potable water and dump: Big Meadows, Otter Creek, Peaks of Otter, Julian Price, Mount Pisgah — all five have a single dump station per loop, free for registered campers (NPS site listings). Linville Falls and Crabtree Falls campgrounds have potable water but no dump. Black Mountain (Pisgah NF) has potable water; the closest dump is Davidson River Campground 25 miles south. Asheville Bear Creek RV Park has full hookups. The driest stretch is Crabtree Falls (MP 339.5) to Mount Pisgah (MP 408.8) — 70 miles with no dump. Plan dumps every 3-4 days: Big Meadows (Day 1), Peaks of Otter (Day 3), Julian Price (Day 4-5), Mount Pisgah (Day 6).
