Can you drive the full 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway in an RV today? No. As of June 2026, the National Park Service has roughly 38 miles of continuous closures between Linville Falls (MP 317.5) and Mount Mitchell (MP 355.3) from Hurricane Helene damage, with reopen targeted for late 2026 — recreation of any kind is prohibited inside that corridor. Can you fit a 13-foot-tall Class A through every tunnel? Also no. Lickstone Ridge (MP 458.8) is 11 ft 8 in at the edgeline, Big Witch (MP 461.2) is 11 ft 7 in, and Bunches Bald (MP 459.3) is 12 ft 3 in. Crossing the centerline to chase the higher clearance is illegal under NPS regulation. What you can do: run Front Royal to Asheville at 45 mph max, pay zero entrance fee, and detour around the Helene corridor on US-221 and NC-226A. Generators are off 9 PM to 8 AM at every NPS campground. Commercial vehicles need written authorization from Parkway HQ; personal-use rented RVs do not. That is the parkway in 2026 — shorter than the brochures suggest, and stricter than the YouTube videos show.
Best window
Mid-September through late October for fall color along the southern North Carolina segments (MP 305-469), per NPS fall color reporting; June for rhododendron bloom in the Virginia section.
Avoid window
November through March — sustained sub-freezing temperatures trigger rolling NPS closures of high-elevation segments (especially MP 305-469 around Grandfather Mountain), and most campgrounds shut down. Hurricane Helene damage between MP 317.5 and MP 355.3 remains closed with "late 2026" target reopen per NPS.
What official guides do not tell you
Helene closure corridor MP 317.5 to MP 355.3 — recreation prohibited
Five consecutive segments between Linville Falls and Mount Mitchell remain fully closed in June 2026 with no recreation of any kind permitted inside the work zone: MP 317.5-324.7, MP 324.7-330.9 (partial reopen MP 327.5-330.9), MP 333.9-342.1, MP 342.1-344.2, and MP 344.2-355.3. NPS targets late 2026 for full corridor reopen. Plan an off-parkway detour via US-221 and NC-226A before booking any campground inside this range.

Lickstone Ridge (MP 458.8) clears 11 ft 8 in at the edgeline / 17 ft 7 in at the centerline. Big Witch (MP 461.2) clears 11 ft 7 in at the edgeline / 18 ft 0 in at the centerline. Bunches Bald (MP 459.3) clears 12 ft 3 in at the edgeline / 18 ft 0 in at the centerline. NPS warns clearances can vary 1 to 6 inches due to pavement fluctuation. Crossing the centerline stripe to use the higher arch is illegal and dangerous per NPS guidance.

Tour and school buses are allowed without a permit per the NPS FAQ. Other commercial vehicles — including DOT-numbered fleet trucks and any vehicle hauling goods for paid use — need prior written authorization from Parkway Headquarters near Asheville. Personal-use rented Class A, Class C, or travel trailers booked for vacation are not classed as commercial. There is no entrance fee for the parkway itself; camping fees apply and Interagency Senior / Access passes earn 50% off the base campground fee.

Use of generators is prohibited from 9:00 PM to 8:00 AM at all Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds. Pets must stay on a leash no longer than six feet and cannot be left unattended. Sites that accommodate trailers or RVs over 30 feet are limited and must be specifically selected at booking on Recreation.gov. Per-night campsite fees are posted at each campground entrance; the campground regulation page was last reviewed by NPS in December 2021 but the underlying 36 CFR rules remain in force.

Bedford VA MP 86-89 is under full rehabilitation (pavement reconstruction, drainage, signage) with completion targeted for summer 2026. Roanoke MP 97-106 and MP 106-121 are under final-phase work targeting fall 2026. Near Blowing Rock NC, intermittent closures run MP 280-285 and MP 291.8-305.1 with staggered access through fall 2026. Roanoke Mountain Loop (MP 120.3) is closed until further notice. The James River area MP 63.5-63.9 has a bridge partial closure with detours at MP 61.4-64.
