Great Smokies: 7-Day TN+NC Loop with Cades Cove Strategy

Three rules decide whether this loop works or fails. First, US-129 (Tail of the Dragon) bans any single vehicle over 30 feet in Tennessee - TDOT closed it to longer rigs after 204 crashes in 24 months. Plan your re-route on Foothills Parkway before you leave Knoxville. Second, Cades Cove Loop Road is closed to cars every Wednesday from May 6 through September 30, 2026 - that is the day you bike the 11-mile loop, not the day you drive it. Third, since March 2023 every vehicle that stops inside the park needs a Park-It-Forward tag ($5 daily, $15 weekly, $40 annual). No tag, no stop, even at a pullout. Layer in the Kuwohi Road season (April 1 through November 30), the Elkmont synchronous firefly lottery (applications close April 27 for May 20-27 viewing), and the constant risk of Newfound Gap (US-441) closing for ice November through March, and your itinerary becomes a sequence of bookable windows rather than a wish list. This 7-day loop sequences those windows from Knoxville with two NPS reservations, two private full-hookup nights, and zero illegal miles on US-129.

Mid-May through late June (firefly window, Kuwohi open, no ice risk on US-441) or mid-September through mid-October (peak color, last vehicle-free Wednesday Sep 30).
Avoid window
December through March: Kuwohi Road closed Dec 1-Mar 31, frequent unannounced US-441 ice closures, Elkmont and Deep Creek campgrounds shuttered.
What official guides do not tell you
US-129 Dragon: 30-ft hard ban (Tennessee)
TDOT prohibits single vehicles and trailer combinations over 30 ft on US-129 in Blount County from Chilhowee to the NC line. The ruling followed 204 crashes (6 fatal) between 2010 and 2012. Re-route on the Foothills Parkway. North Carolina restricts trucks-with-trailers over 30 ft on its US-129 segment but does not restrict single RVs - still, Tennessee enforcement covers the only practical access from the west.

The 11-mile Cades Cove Loop closes to motor vehicles every Wednesday from May 6 through September 30, 2026. Only bicycles (including Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes) are permitted. 20 mph speed limit. Parking-tag still required to leave the rig at the orientation shelter lot; arrive after 1 pm to avoid the morning lot-full closure.

Every vehicle that stops anywhere inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park needs a parking tag: $5 daily, $15 weekly ($26.99 annual via Smokies Life). Buy on Recreation.gov, at any visitor center, or at fee kiosks (Townsend Wye, Cades Cove). Display on dashboard. 100% of revenue stays in the park for maintenance and law-enforcement staffing.

Photinus carolinus synchronous display runs eight nights. Lottery on Recreation.gov opens 10 am EDT April 24, closes 11:59 pm EDT April 27, 2026. $1 non-refundable application; $29 reservation charged only if drawn. 120 vehicle reservations per night (960 total). Each reservation admits one vehicle, up to 7 occupants. Notification by May 6.
NPS Great Smoky Mountains - 2026 Firefly Event(opens in new tab)Kuwohi Road seasonal closure (Dec 1 - Mar 31)
The 7-mile spur to Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome, 6,643 ft) closes every winter from December 1 through March 31 because of snow and ice. Pedestrians and cyclists may still access the closed road from Newfound Gap Road in winter, but no vehicles. 2026 reopening: April 1.

US-441 across Newfound Gap is the only paved trans-park route and is subject to unannounced closures November through March when snow or ice develops at 5,000 ft. Closures are typically lifted within hours. Check the NPS Current Conditions page on departure morning; have an I-40-via-Asheville detour ready if crossing the park is mandatory.
