First, Charleston County code prohibits living or sleeping in an RV outside a licensed RV park or campground, and the City of Charleston bans camping in its emergency-use parking garages (Sec. 19-247) — meaning the downtown peninsula is effectively off-limits for overnight rig use. Second, when sustained winds hit 30 mph, the Arthur Ravenel Jr.

Bridge over the Cooper River goes into Condition Yellow, and SCDOT/Charleston County emergency management advise motor homes, box trucks, and trailers off the high-span. Third, June 1 through November 30 is Atlantic hurricane season — SCEMD requires all RV occupants to evacuate the moment a county evacuation order is issued, regardless of zone.

Layer in the 13-month booking window at Edisto Beach State Park, the up-to-100-foot pull-throughs at James Island County Park, and the once-a-year Cooper River Bridge Run (March 28, 2026) that shuts the bridge from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., and arrival logistics demand actual planning, not a vibe. Below: every ordinance citation, every dump address, and the surge windows you cannot book around.

When to come

Best: Mid-March through early May — daytime highs 68-78F, low humidity, azaleas peak, before Spoleto/hurricane pricing kicks in.

Skip: August through mid-September — peak hurricane probability, 90F+ heat indices 100-110F, and mandatory RV evacuations can void your booking with hours of notice.

Your first hour in Charleston

Before you leave the lot

Confirm your campground reservation length cap matches your rig — Edisto Beach SP caps at ~40 ft, James Island County Park accepts up to 100 ft.
Top off propane at U-Haul Rivers Ave (2155 Credit Union Ln, North Charleston) — easiest big-rig access of the three city U-Haul propane points, 7 days/week.
If arriving Jun 1 - Nov 30, save the SCEMD evacuation hotline and pre-book a fallback inland site (Columbia or Aiken KOA) before settling in.

Within the first hour

Dump tanks on arrival at your campground's station (James Island/KOA/Oak Plantation/Lake Aire all have on-site) — there are no free public dumps inside city limits.

Before you park overnight

Do NOT attempt to overnight on the downtown peninsula — Charleston Sec. 19-247 bans camping in city garages and Charleston County zoning bans RV residence outside licensed parks.

Also worth doing

Check Charleston County Emergency Management bridge advisory page before crossing the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge — if Condition Yellow (30 mph sustained winds) is active, reroute via I-526 Don Holt Bridge.
If your stay overlaps the last weekend of March, check Cooper River Bridge Run road-closure map (bridgerun.com) — Ravenel closes 7-11 a.m. Saturday.

The mistake renters make

Crossing the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge during a Condition Yellow wind advisory (sustained 30 mph). The bridge stays technically open, but Charleston County advisories specifically warn motor homes, box trucks, and trailers off the high-span — and a semi has already overturned on it during a storm.

City of Charleston parking garages opened during flood/wind emergencies prohibit trailers, boats, and overnight camping in any vehicle. Even during hurricane shelter activation you cannot stage an RV or towable in a city garage; plan to evacuate inland to a campground before order issuance.

SCEMD Know Your Zone — South Carolina Hurricane Guide
All persons in mobile homes, manufactured homes, and recreational vehicles must evacuate for any hurricane evacuation order, regardless of which lettered evacuation zone (A-I) is named. Your park's zone is irrelevant — once SCEMD orders evacuation, you are required to leave, including from James Island County Park and Edisto Beach SP. Pre-book an inland fallback before June 1.
