Two adjacent public lands extend the playbook for renters whose trip plan extends beyond city limits: Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge and Sea Pines Forest Preserve. The two arterials worth scenic-drive time are Hilton Head Bike Trail System and SC Coastal Heritage Scenic Byway (US-17). Tank-dump access lives at Hilton Head Motorcoach Resort ($10); propane at U-Haul of Bluffton on 350 Fording Island Rd, Bluffton, SC 29910.
The calendar moment that swings local availability is RBC Heritage PGA golf on mid-April — all lowcountry-area lodging at 100%. Aim for Mid-March through May and September through October; skip August. The single most expensive mistake locals see arriving rigs make is showing up to hilton head motorcoach resort during rbc heritage week without a reservation, and it all RV space sold out 9+ months ahead at 3-5x rates.

Parking ordinances that bite RVs
It is unlawful to park any vehicle overnight in any metered or un-metered space in any town parking lot, or in any metered or un-metered public parking space in any public right-of-way, within the municipal limits of the town.
Citation: Hilton Head Island Municipal Code Sec. 12-3-211(e) (Parking in violation of posted or marked restrictions declared unlawful)
What this means for you: A flat, island-wide overnight ban covering every town lot and every public parking space. It does not depend on signage and it does not depend on vehicle size — an RV is caught the same as a sedan. There is no beach-access overnight option on Hilton Head; plan on a campground or an off-island stop.
It is unlawful to park any vehicle within the right-of-way of any public road in the town, except in a town-designated, defined and marked parking space and in accordance with posted restrictions. It is also unlawful to park in any public beach access other than in a defined, marked space.
Citation: Hilton Head Island Municipal Code Sec. 12-3-211(g) and (h) (Parking in violation of posted or marked restrictions declared unlawful)
What this means for you: This removes the roadside-shoulder option entirely — on Hilton Head there is no lawful verge parking, only marked spaces. For an RV that matters more than for a car, because marked spaces on the island are sized for passenger vehicles and an oversized rig that overhangs into the right-of-way is in violation of (g) even while nominally 'in' a space.
For purposes of the town's motor vehicle and traffic chapter, 'motor vehicle' expressly includes motor homes and motorized campers.
Citation: Hilton Head Island Municipal Code Sec. 12-1-110 (Motor vehicle defined)
What this means for you: Included because it forecloses the common argument that a general 'vehicle' rule does not reach an RV. On Hilton Head the code says otherwise in its own definitions, so Sec. 12-3-211's overnight and right-of-way bans apply to motor homes on their face.
Driving or operating any motor vehicle of any kind on the beaches within the town is unlawful, except for government, law enforcement, emergency and permitted vehicles, and small motorized vehicles for qualifying persons with physical handicaps.
Citation: Hilton Head Island Municipal Code Sec. 8-1-211(1) (Prohibited and regulated activities on the beach)
What this means for you: Settles the beach-driving question definitively for Hilton Head: no. Worth stating because several nearby Atlantic and Gulf beaches do allow permitted vehicle access, and travellers generalise.
