Timing
October through April, with van-specific angles on the festival calendar: SXSW (mid-March) and ACL (two October weekends) price every park at multiples — but a van's ability to use any legal site, however small, widens your options when the big-rig sites are gone. July and August work against vans harder than the numbers suggest: 95-105 F with high humidity outruns van air conditioning on battery, so those months demand hookup sites and pool access. The flash-flood rule is the year-round constant: April through October, check the NWS Austin watch status before creek-side nights — the guide's 10-15-feet-in-30-minutes warning applies to every rig equally.

The van base that makes Austin work: full hookups on Barton Springs Road, two miles from downtown and walking distance to Zilker Park, about $80 a night on a 12-month window. During ACL the location is literally inside the event's gravity; the rest of the year it means downtown evenings without a parking calculation. Dump on site at $15.
The $30 state-park alternative ten miles southeast: 81 full-hookup sites, free dump for guests, and Onion Creek through the property for morning swims. A van books the same 5-month, 8 a.m.-Central window as everyone else — but fits the sites that remain when the 50-footers have claimed the premium rows.

Good to know
No — §9-4-11 prohibits camping or sleeping in vehicles on public streets, parks, and rights-of-way, and retail lots require owner permission. The 72-hour parking cap of §12-2 governs the parked van regardless. Austin's saving grace is Pecan Grove: legal full-hookup camping two miles from the center, which beats any street-sleeping gamble on price-per-consequence.
It is the most flexible one: festival weeks price every park at 3-5x with minimums, and a van can take whatever legal site remains — including tighter sites big rigs can't book. But flexibility doesn't beat arithmetic: the 12-month windows at Pecan Grove and the private parks still decide who camps near the action. Book like it matters.
The two the city guide anchors: Pedernales Falls State Park, 33 miles west with river access and $24 sites if the day trip becomes an overnight, and the Lockhart run 31 miles south through barbecue country with Lockhart State Park as the landing. A van turns both into fuel-cheap day loops with a built-in kitchen for the drive home.
