Pedernales Falls State Park (33 mi W in Hill Country) is the gateway to the LBJ NHP loop and offers 69 W/E sites.
Austin sits at 489 ft on a limestone aquifer that responds quickly to rain — flash flood risk on the Colorado River, Lake Austin, and Onion Creek is real and rapid (NWS Austin/San Antonio flash flood watches frequently issued April-October). Plan dump and propane in town, base out of McKinney Falls SP or Pecan Grove RV Park, and book event-window stays 6+ months ahead.

Best: October through April: highs 60-78 F, low humidity, all parks operational. Trade-off: ACL October fills supply; SXSW + Relays + F1 each pull supply.

The mistake renters make
Camping at McKinney Falls or Pedernales during a summer monsoon outflow event and parking on the lower loops near Onion Creek or the Pedernales River. Onion Creek and the Pedernales rise 10-15 ft in 30 minutes during flash floods; NWS Austin/San Antonio routinely issues flash flood warnings with 15-minute lead time. Evacuation to upper loops is mandatory and rangers will physically check campsites.
