The Atlantic hurricane window (June 1 - November 30) drives every coastal stay decision.
Brazos Bend State Park (40 mi SW of downtown) is the closest serious campground inland with 75 W/E sites and an on-site dump station — it sits at 100 ft elevation but the Brazos River bottoms flood quickly during named storm events. Galveston Island State Park (54 mi SE) offers 30 hookup sites on the Gulf side with dump station. Houston elevation averages 80 ft.
