The operational killer in Houston is hurricane evacuation logistics: Galveston-bound and southwest Harris County RV parks have contracted evacuation routing — most require renters to identify their hurricane evacuation zip code at check-in and confirm their inland reroute (I-10 west to San Antonio, US-59 north to Lufkin, or I-45 north to Dallas) before issuing a campsite. The Atlantic hurricane window (June 1 - November 30) drives every coastal stay decision.
Brazos Bend State Park (40 mi SW of downtown) is the closest serious campground inland with 75 W/E sites and an on-site dump station — it sits at 100 ft elevation but the Brazos River bottoms flood quickly during named storm events. Galveston Island State Park (54 mi SE) offers 30 hookup sites on the Gulf side with dump station. Houston elevation averages 80 ft.
Plan dump and propane in town, base out of Brazos Bend SP or Lakeview RV Resort, identify your evacuation route before booking, and check the National Hurricane Center daily during the June-November window.
When to come
Best: Mid-October through May 15: highs 65-82 F, low hurricane risk, all parks operational. Trade-off: Rodeo saturates Feb-Mar.
Skip: August through October: peak Atlantic hurricane window; basin highs 92-100 F + humidity; flash flood risk continuous.

Before you leave the lot
- Top off propane at U-Haul (5602 Wayside) or AmeriGas Genoa Red Bluff before any Big Bend or East Texas run.

- Identify your hurricane evacuation route (I-10 W, US-59 N, or I-45 N) BEFORE checking in Jun-Nov.
Before you park overnight
- Do not park overnight on Houston city streets — §28-43 enforced.

- Confirm Brazos Bend SP, Lakeview, KOA, or Galveston Island reservation BEFORE driving in; Rodeo fills 90 days ahead.
- Fuel diesel + DEF at Pilot/Flying J (10810 N Loop E) or Loves Baytown before any push.
- Check NHC daily during hurricane season; tropical systems can advance from Caribbean to Houston within 4-7 days.
- Confirm campground hurricane refund policy before booking; some refund only on county evacuation order.
The mistake renters make
Booking a Galveston Island State Park weekend in August or September without an inland evacuation reservation pre-booked at Brazos Bend or Bastrop. When a Gulf hurricane enters the western Gulf, evacuation contraflow on I-45 north fills inland RV parks within 12 hours. Renters without a confirmed inland reservation may end up at Walmart lots in Conroe or Lufkin.
