Tanks and gauges
13 minYour rig has four tanks (sometimes five): fresh water, gray water (kitchen/shower), black water (toilet), propane, and sometimes a separate galley gray. The tank-gauge panel typically shows fresh/gray/black as 0/1/3/2/3 (four lights). The math is not linear: a panel that reads 1/3 might be anywhere from 25% to 50% full depending on the calibration.
The reason for the imprecision is the sensor type. Most rental RVs use stick-probe sensors that touch the tank wall at fixed points. Toilet paper, food particles, and soap residue stick to the sensors and create false readings. A tank that reads "1/3 full" on the panel might be "empty" if the sensors are dirty (false high reading) or "full" if the sensors have shorted (false low reading).
The fix is to clean the sensors at the dump station. Run hot water and a tablespoon of dish soap through the tank with a tank wand for 30 seconds, then dump. After a few cycles, the sensors read accurately. The host's pre-rental cleaning typically includes this; on a long rental, the renter should do it once at midpoint.

Propane and the regulator
12 minYour rig runs three propane appliances: the stove, the furnace, and the water heater (some rigs add the fridge in propane mode). Propane is stored in tanks under high pressure and reduced to working pressure by a two-stage regulator. The first stage drops tank pressure to about 10 PSI; the second stage drops it to about 11 inches of water column, which is appliance pressure.
A failed regulator is the most common propane-system fault. Symptoms: the stove flame is yellow instead of blue (rich mixture), the furnace makes a popping sound at startup (delayed ignition), or no propane reaches the appliances at all (regulator stuck closed). The fix is regulator replacement, which is a 10-minute job at any RV shop and is typically the host's responsibility under the rental agreement.
Detecting a leak: a smell of rotten egg (the mercaptan additive in propane) at the regulator, the tank fitting, or any appliance is a leak. Shut off the tank, ventilate the rig, and call the host. Do not light any flame, do not turn on any electrical switch, do not use the engine starter. A propane explosion inside an RV is a fatality event.

Inverter vs. converter
12 minTwo devices that share a panel and confuse every first-time renter. A converter converts shore power (120V AC from a campground hookup or generator) to 12V DC to charge the battery and power the 12V lights, fans, and water pump. An inverter converts 12V DC battery power to 120V AC to run small electronics from the battery — without a generator.
Practical implications: when you are connected to shore power, the converter is running and the battery is being charged. The 120V outlets in the rig run directly off shore power. When you are off-grid (no shore power, generator off), the inverter (if installed) runs the 120V outlets off the battery — for as long as the battery and the inverter's wattage rating allow.
Most rental RVs have a 1,000W inverter on a dedicated outlet near the dinette. This is enough to charge a laptop, run a TV, or boil water in an electric kettle for a few minutes. It is not enough to run a microwave, a hair dryer, a coffee maker with a built-in heating element, or an air conditioner. The listing publishes the inverter wattage; ask the host if it is not stated.

Three common off-grid failures
13 minFailure 1: the fridge stops cooling on propane. The cause is almost always a clogged burner orifice or a failed thermocouple. The renter's fix is to switch the fridge to electric mode (if shore power or generator) and call the host. Do not attempt to clean the burner yourself; it requires a precise reassembly.
Failure 2: the water heater runs cold despite the propane being on. The cause is either a failed pilot light (older rigs), a failed igniter (newer rigs), or a sediment buildup in the tank. The first check is the breaker (sometimes the water heater has a separate breaker in the panel that was tripped); the second check is the bypass valves on the back of the heater (sometimes accidentally turned during winterizing). If neither resolves it, call the host.
Failure 3: the water pump runs constantly. The cause is either an air-locked line (run a faucet to clear), a small leak in a fitting (visible in the water-bay), or a failed check-valve in the pump itself. The renter's fix is to turn off the pump at night to prevent the battery drain that comes with continuous cycling.
