Chugach State Park · caps RVs at 35 ft

Half a million acres of Chugach Range wilderness wrap directly around Anchorage's eastern edge — the third-largest state park in the United States and the closest large-wildland-tract-to-major-city anywhere in the country. Eagle River Campground (57 sites, dry-camp, 35-ft cap) and Eklutna Lake Campground (50 sites, similar specs) are the two developed RV-friendly loops; the rest of the park is backcountry inventory. Both run mid-May through mid-September with dump stations on-site. Reservations through the Alaska DNR portal open the calendar year for the upcoming season. Brown bear and black bear protocols match Alaska's full backcountry standard — bear canisters required in many backcountry zones and food storage strictly enforced in front-country loops. Aurora season runs late August through mid-April; the campground latitudes deliver visible aurora roughly 100+ nights a year.
