The wild horse herd — descendants of either shipwrecked Spanish stock (per local legend) or 17th-century mainland farmers' tax-evasion releases (per the documented record) — roams the Assateague barrier island unfenced, and the state park's 350-site campground enforces strict food-storage rules because the horses regularly walk through camp scavenging coolers. The Bayside and Oceanside Loops hold 30-amp electric and water hookups at a 40-ft cap, mid-April through October operation, dump station at the entrance. Reservations open 13 months ahead via the Maryland DNR portal and summer-weekend Oceanside sites fill within hours of the calendar opening. Mosquito and biting-fly density spikes June and July — the marine layer plus stagnant tidal pools breed insects so aggressively that screens are non-optional. The adjacent Assateague Island NS (federal) operates separate camping inventory on the same island.
