Jockey's Ridge: An RV Traveler's Guide
PickRV Editorial
The small team behind PickRV
Jockey's Ridge State Park rises from the heart of the Outer Banks in Nags Head, North Carolina, home to the tallest living sand dune system on the Atlantic coast. Bare, wind-shaped sand stands above the maritime thickets and the sound, with sweeping views toward both the ocean and Roanoke Sound. Managed by North Carolina State Parks in Dare County, it is a one-of-a-kind East Coast dune landscape and a memorable Outer Banks stop on an RV trip.
Can you camp at Jockey's Ridge State Park in an RV?
No — there are no camping facilities inside Jockey's Ridge State Park. The official NC State Parks page notes the nearest state park with camping is Pettigrew State Park; many private Outer Banks campgrounds are also nearby. Use the park as a day-use stop on an RV tour.

The dunes at Jockey's Ridge are a 'living' system — the wind keeps moving the sand, so the ridge slowly shifts over time. From the crest you can see Roanoke Sound on one side and the Atlantic on the other, a panorama that makes the climb worth it.
Spring and fall bring the most comfortable temperatures for crossing the open sand, which can grow very hot underfoot in midsummer. The steady Outer Banks wind is part of the experience and shapes the dunes you walk on.
Because there is no camping in the park, plan to base at a nearby Outer Banks campground and visit Jockey's Ridge for the day; check the NC State Parks site for current hours and conditions.
