Step 3 — Register the device
Garmin / ZOLEO / SPOT register through their portals. PLBs MUST be registered with NOAA SARSAT at no cost — unregistered PLBs significantly delay SAR response. Update registration whenever owner / contact info changes.

Step 4 — Test the device in cell-free conditions before relying on it
Send a check-in message from a known-no-cell location BEFORE the trip you need it on. The most expensive failure mode is buying the device, never testing it, and having it fail at the worst moment.

Step 5 — Carry it on your body, not in the rig
If you are injured 100 yards from the RV, a satellite messenger in the RV does nothing. Wear it on a belt, vest, or chest harness during any hike, paddle, or off-rig activity. The device that lives in the basement does not save lives.

Step 6 — Train every adult in the party on how to use the SOS
If you are unconscious, someone else has to send the SOS. Brief everyone in the party on the device location, the SOS sequence, and the two-way text basics. Do this at the start of every trip.
Prevention
Pair satellite messenger with route filing
Tell a known contact your route, expected arrival, and check-in cadence. If you miss a check-in by 6+ hours, they should contact local SAR with the satellite-messenger ID. The device and the route plan are complementary.
Set a daily check-in cadence
Even on safe days, send a 1-line check-in to a known contact. This establishes baseline confidence; a missed check-in then becomes a real signal rather than 'maybe they're just out of range.'
Charge the device every night you have power
Garmin inReach Mini 2 holds approximately 14 days of standby on a single charge; ZOLEO ~200 hours. Charge nightly when you have shore power or generator. A dead device in an emergency is worse than no device.
Keep firmware updated
All three providers push firmware updates that improve battery life, fix coverage gaps, and add features. Update before any long trip; the update process requires their app and a Wi-Fi or cell-data connection.
Never repurpose the SOS button
SOS is for actual life-or-death emergencies. False SOS triggers SAR mobilization, can cost SAR providers thousands of dollars, and may carry civil liability. Use two-way text for non-life-threatening communication.
Carry a backup — PLB OR spare batteries OR cellular satellite fallback
A redundant safety system matters when the primary fails. Common redundancies: PLB as SOS-only backup, spare USB battery pack, or — for newer iPhones — Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite as a cellular-free fallback for the device-less moment.

Two-way text changes the response calculus more than people realize
SAR coordinators triage differently when they can text the patient. A 'broken ankle, can shelter, low priority' text routes to a daylight ground rescue. A 'chest pain, unable to walk' text routes to a helicopter. SOS-only devices force the worst-case assumption — which sometimes delays the right response.
Iridium beats Globalstar for absolute global coverage but the gap is narrowing
Iridium has 66 active low-earth-orbit satellites and 'truly polar' coverage. Globalstar has 24 active satellites and gaps near the poles and parts of Africa / southern oceans. For most U.S. RV travel, both work; for cross-border / international, Iridium is the safer default.
PLBs have no subscription — that is the killer feature for occasional use
A registered PLB costs $250-400 once and works for 10+ years with no monthly fee. For travelers who only need SOS (no two-way text) and only on occasional trips, a PLB beats any subscription messenger on total cost. The trade is no check-in, no advice, no confirmation that help is coming.
Apple Emergency SOS via Satellite is real, but limited
Modern iPhones can route emergency SOS to a satellite when out of cell coverage. The interaction is text-based, slow (15-30 second message latency), and limited to emergency dispatch. It is not a substitute for a dedicated messenger but it is a meaningful backstop for the moments you forgot the device.
Test the device in a deliberately no-cell location BEFORE you need it
The single most common failure mode is buying the device, charging it, throwing it in the basement, and never testing it. Trail the SOS rehearsal with the provider (most allow test SOS by appointment) and send a real check-in message from outside cell coverage. Find the friction before the emergency.

What happens when I press the SOS button?
The device transmits your GPS coordinates and an SOS code to a coordination center (IERCC for inReach / ZOLEO, GEOS for SPOT, NOAA SARSAT for PLB). They contact local SAR (county sheriff, NPS rangers, etc.) who dispatch ground or air rescue. Response time depends on terrain, weather, and helicopter availability — typically 4-12 hours in remote terrain.
