The Hidden-Fee Decoder
Why a $89 quote becomes $1,400.
Every fee competitors bury, decoded — and exactly how PickRV handles each one. The transparency is the point: a platform can't show all its fees up-front unless it's willing to be judged on them.

Why did my $89 RV rental quote become $1,400?
The headline nightly rate is rarely the real total. On top of the rental, common fees stack up: mileage overage past the included cap, generator hours after a free block, dump and cleaning fees, a refundable security-deposit hold, one-way drop fees, and add-ons like propane, pets, or extra drivers — plus fuel, campgrounds, park entry, and state tax. The fix isn't a magic low price; it's seeing every line up-front. On PickRV each host fee is shown on the listing before you book, and the service fee and tax are itemized at checkout.

Included-mileage cap + overage›
Most RV rentals include a daily mileage allowance (often 100–150 mi/day); miles beyond it bill per-mile (commonly $0.30–$0.75/mi). A long one-way route can quietly add hundreds.
On PickRV: Each host sets their own included miles and overage rate, and both are shown on the listing before you book — no surprise per-mile bill at drop-off.
Generator hours ($/hr after free block)›
Motorhomes meter generator use. A block of free hours is typical, then it bills per hour (often $3–$5/hr). Boondockers who run AC overnight feel this most.
On PickRV: Generator policy and any per-hour rate are part of the host's listing terms, disclosed up-front — you decide before you book, not after.
Dump / tank-cleaning fee›
If you return with full black/grey tanks, many rentals charge a flat dump fee (commonly $50–$150). Some waive it if you dump yourself first.
On PickRV: Return-condition expectations and any dump fee are spelled out by the host before booking, so you can plan a dump stop and skip the charge.
Cleaning fee›
A flat turnover cleaning charge, or a penalty only if the rig comes back excessively dirty. Policies vary widely host to host.
On PickRV: Any cleaning fee is itemized on the listing up-front — never a vague after-the-fact surprise on your final statement.
Security deposit (a HOLD, not a charge)›
A refundable authorization hold against damage — it is released after the trip if nothing's wrong. It is NOT money you spend; it just needs to be available on your card.
On PickRV: Shown clearly as a refundable hold (not a cost), with the amount disclosed before you commit. It is never folded into your trip total.
One-way / drop fee›
Picking up in one city and dropping in another can carry a relocation fee, set by how far the rig has to be repositioned.
On PickRV: One-way availability and any drop fee are host-set and shown before booking — we never invent a distance or a fee you didn't agree to.
Propane · pet · extra-driver›
Add-ons like a propane refill, a pet-friendly surcharge, or an additional insured driver are common line items that stack quietly at the counter.
On PickRV: Every add-on a host offers is listed with its price up-front, so the number you see before booking is the number you pay.
Service fee (ours is shown before you commit)›
Marketplaces add a renter service fee on top of the rental. The problem isn't the fee — it's burying it until the final screen.
On PickRV: PickRV's flat 10% service fee and your state tax are the ONLY checkout add-ons, both itemized before payment. The listed price is the all-in host price.
The whole bill, before you commit
The listed price is the all-in host price. Host add-ons (mileage, generator, cleaning, etc.) are shown on the listing. At checkout the only additions are a flat 10% service fee and your state tax, both itemized. PickRV is not an insurer and does not sell or offer coverage; renters bring their own auto/RV policy. Free cancellation runs up to 48 hours before pickup.
