The Underground Railroad was the informal network of routes, safe houses, and individuals (predominantly Black abolitionists and free Black communities, with some white allies) that helped enslaved people escape to free states + Canada from the early 19th century through the Civil War. Honoring the freedom-seeker history
Underground Railroad commemoration is centered on the freedom-seekers themselves and the African American communities that supported them. White abolitionists played meaningful roles but were not the primary actors.
Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, William Still, and many less-famous individuals risked their lives to operate the network. Travel with awareness of the moral courage required.
