The American Civil War (1861-1865) is one of the most-interpreted periods of US history. NPS manages over 40 Civil War battlefields and sites. The integrated RV circuit covers Gettysburg, Antietam, Vicksburg, Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Petersburg. Recent NPS interpretation has expanded to include USCT (United States Colored Troops) perspective and enslaved-people experience — moving beyond the older battle-focused interpretation.

Expanded interpretation

Recent NPS interpretation of Civil War battlefields includes USCT (United States Colored Troops) — 200,000+ African American soldiers who fought for the Union. Their stories were historically excluded from battlefield interpretation; NPS has corrected this.

The interpretation also includes the experience of enslaved people on and near the battlefields. Many plantations adjacent to battlefields have been surveyed for the enslaved-laborer history. Visit with awareness of the full population affected by the war.

Confederate monuments removal is ongoing. NPS units have shifted from Confederate-centered interpretation to integrated interpretation.

What NPS Civil War interpretation doesn't tell you

NPS battlefield interpretation has substantially improved. Older interpretation often centered Confederate perspective or 'both sides' framing. Newer interpretation centers the actual cause (slavery) and the actual outcome (emancipation + Reconstruction failure + Jim Crow).

Visit with the recent interpretation. Skip older state-sponsored Confederate monuments without context.
