How do I drive the San Juan Skyway in a large RV?
Drive the loop in either direction excluding the Million Dollar Highway segment. The route via Durango-Mancos-Cortez-Dolores-Telluride-Placerville-Ridgway-Ouray is fully RV-friendly. To return to Durango from Ouray without driving the Million Dollar Highway, take US-550 north to Montrose, then US-50 east, then either US-285 south or US-160 east. Adds about 200 miles but is RV-friendly throughout.

The San Juan Skyway hits four distinct mountain towns in 233 miles: Durango (historic railroad town, Mesa Verde gateway), Telluride (ski resort + film festival town in a boxed canyon), Ouray (Switzerland of America), and Silverton (mining-era ghost town turned tourist village). Each has overnight RV options and worth a stop.
The non-Million-Dollar-Highway sections of the loop are gentle. CO-145 over Lizard Head Pass is engineered to federal-highway spec. Ridgway-to-Ouray on US-550 is similarly RV-friendly.
The marquee challenge for big-rig travelers is the Ouray-Silverton-Durango segment via the Million Dollar Highway. For RV travelers in rigs under 25 feet, the loop can be done in either direction. For larger rigs, the loop becomes a 'wedge' — drive in via one approach, drive out via another, and detour around the Million Dollar Highway segment via Montrose-Gunnison-US-50.

Colorado tourism markets the Skyway as a single experience. The honest reality is that it is four separate sub-trips connected by road: Durango-Mesa Verde, Telluride canyon, Ouray-Ridgway, and Silverton via the Million Dollar Highway. Each has its own character. Spending time at each — versus blowing through in a single day — is what makes the loop worthwhile.
The big-rig detour story is undercovered. Class A travelers can absolutely do this loop. They just need to use US-550 north to Montrose and US-50 east as the closure of the Ouray-Silverton segment.
