What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
The USFS site lists Sam Houston as 'national forest' but doesn't tell you it's actually 4 SEPARATE units (Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, Angelina, Sabine) — sometimes a 90min drive between units. Most maps don't show this clearly. Second non-obvious: the Lone Star Hiking Trail is Texas's only 100mi+ single-track but few realize sections are RV-bike-friendly (gravel) while others are hike-only. Third: hunting season (Nov 5 - Jan 22 typically) closes some hunting units to non-hunters — verify before camping; bring blaze orange. Fourth: the Cagle Recreation Area paid sites are FAR more developed than people expect (50A hookup, paved pads, swim beach) — comparable to a state park experience.
