More on Acadia National ParkField notes, rig limits by loop, seasons, what to do, quiet spots
Acadia National Park covers Mount Desert Island and parts of the Schoodic Peninsula in coastal Maine — about 49,000 acres of granite peaks, fjords, and rocky shoreline. The two long-time RV-friendly campgrounds (Blackwoods + Seawall) impose a 35ft length max and have no hookups; book 2 months out via Recreation.gov. Cadillac Mountain summit (the highest point on the US Atlantic coast) requires a timed-entry vehicle reservation from late May through mid-October — only 1,000 vehicles/day allowed. Bar Harbor itself has 4-5 private RV parks within 10 minutes when in-park sites are full.
The notes below are PickRV's editorial record. Only the figures in the strip at the top of the page, each with its link and date, were re-read on the park's own pages.
Acadia covers a patchwork of granite headlands, spruce-fir forest, and rocky coast on Mount Desert Island off the Maine shore. The 27-mile Park Loop Road traces the most visited stretch — Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Jordan Pond, and the summit road up Cadillac Mountain, which catches the contiguous U.S.'s earliest sunrise much of the year.
When to visit
Late June through early October brings warm days, full visitor services, and peak leaf-peeping in the last two weeks of September; Cadillac Summit Road requires a vehicle reservation in season.
RV access notes
Blackwoods and Seawall campgrounds accept RVs (size limits vary by loop; check the latest park bulletin); there are no hookups inside the park — dump stations and full-service RV parks sit just outside in Bar Harbor and Trenton.

What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
NPS.gov shows Cadillac timed-entry permits but doesn't quantify: only 100 of the 1,000 daily slots are released same-day — the rest go on the 90-day-ahead lottery. If you didn't book ahead, log on at 10am ET DAILY for the 2-day-ahead release. Second: the most-overlooked Cadillac Mountain visit is at SUNRISE in October — fewer crowds than summer (sunrise time pushes back to ~7am), and the ocean fog burning off the granite hits 80% of mornings. Third: Schoodic Peninsula (the mainland half of Acadia) is criminally underused — 30 min farther from Bar Harbor but with 90% fewer crowds, and Schoodic Woods Campground accepts longer rigs (40ft) than Blackwoods/Seawall. Fourth: the carriage roads (45mi of John D Rockefeller-funded crushed-stone roads) are perfect for e-bikes — Bar Harbor has 4 e-bike rental shops, $50/day, and you skip the Park Loop traffic entirely. Fifth: lobster — Bar Harbor restaurants charge $40+ for a lobster roll; drive 25 min north to Trenton or Hancock for $18-22 versions of equal quality.

Before you rent in Maine — key local rules
Standard license is enough below 26,001 lbs GVWR
29-A M.R.S. §1252: a Class B license is for a single vehicle of 26,001+ lbs GVWR; a Class C license (Maine's standard license) covers any single vehicle or combination not meeting the Class A or B definitions, i.e. under 26,001 lbs, and additionally "A Class C license authorizes: ... (2) A person to operate recreational vehicles for personal use".
Boater safety course required if you were born on or after Jan 1, 1999
Maine requires a completed boater safety and education course to operate a motorboat over 25 horsepower on inland or territorial waters if you were born on or after January 1, 1999 — in 2026 that reaches adults up to about age 27. Boat renters who meet the state's rental-agreement requirements are exempt, as are registered Maine guides and commercial fishermen while fishing. USCG navigation rules still apply on tidal waters.
ATV registration required — $70 resident, $115 nonresident season
Every ATV ridden in Maine must be registered with IF&W: $70 for residents (plus an agent fee, with sales or use tax due before you register) and $115 for a nonresident season or $100 for 7 days. Registrations run on a season that ends June 30, and they cover the roughly 6,000 mi of connected multi-use trails in the Maine ATV Trails program.
