Universal quiet hours (most campgrounds)
Per most NPS + state park + private campground regulations:
Standard quiet hours: 10:00 PM - 7:00 AM (or 10 PM - 8 AM at some campgrounds).
Generator hours typically RESTRICTED outside generator-allowed window: 8 AM - 8 PM at most NPS campgrounds. Some campgrounds even more restrictive (10 AM - 6 PM).
Many campgrounds prohibit generators ENTIRELY (verify before booking).

Caveat: Per NPS rules at Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Zion + many other major parks: generator hours are 8 AM - 8 PM with specific subsections having NO generators allowed. Verify per campground at recreation.gov.
Decibel ratings (the metric that matters)
Generator noise measured in decibels (dB) at specific distance. Per OSHA + NPS noise regulations:
Whisper-quiet: <50 dB at 23 ft (Honda EU2200i, Yamaha EF2200iS).
Quiet: 50-60 dB at 23 ft (Champion 2500w dual-fuel, WEN 56380i, Predator 3500w).
Loud: 60-70 dB at 23 ft (Champion 4000w open frame, Predator 5500w).
Very loud: 70+ dB at 23 ft (cheap import open-frame 5000w+).
- Honda EU2200i: 48-57 dB (industry quietest)
- Yamaha EF2200iS: 47-57 dB (Honda competitor)
- Champion 2500w dual-fuel: 53-58 dB
- Open-frame contractor units: 70-78 dB (often prohibited at campgrounds)
Inverter generators — why they're the campground standard
Inverter generators (Honda EU, Yamaha EF, Champion inverter, Predator inverter) produce 'clean' sine-wave power suitable for sensitive electronics (TVs, residential fridges, CPAP machines).
Conventional open-frame generators (Champion 4000w open-frame, Predator open-frame) produce 'dirty' power that can damage sensitive electronics over time.
Inverter generators throttle engine speed based on load — quieter at low load.
Conventional generators run at constant RPM — always full noise.
Onan onboard generators (factory installed)
Most Class A + Class C motorhomes have factory-installed Onan generators (3.6-7 kW typical).
Onan QG 4000 (typical Class C): ~63 dB at 23 ft. Powered by rig's propane or gasoline.
Onan QD 6000 (typical Class A diesel): ~66 dB at 23 ft. Powered by rig's diesel.
Quieter than open-frame portables but louder than Honda EU2200i. Acceptable at most campgrounds but follow generator-hour rules strictly.
Soft-start kits (the AC-on-generator trick)
Standard rooftop RV AC (13K-15K BTU) needs 2,500-3,500 watts surge to start. Most 2-3 kW generators can't supply the surge — AC fails to start.
Soft-start kits (Micro-Air EasyStart $250-350) gently ramp the AC compressor startup over 1-2 sec instead of instant.
Result: a 2.2 kW Honda EU2200i can start AND run a 13.5K BTU AC. Game-changing for boondocking.
Installation: 30-45 min by a competent installer or DIY. Required for AC-on-portable-generator.
Generator placement etiquette
Place generator on the side AWAY from neighbors.
Run an extension cord (12 gauge minimum, properly rated for the load).
NEVER place inside the RV or in an enclosed space (CO poisoning risk).
NEVER place against a wall or in a corner (heat buildup + restricted airflow + amplified sound).
Solar + battery alternative (eliminates generator need most of the time)
Investment: 200-400W solar + 200-400Ah lithium = $1,500-3,500 install.
Result: most non-AC loads run silently for days without generator. Refrigerator, lights, water pump, phone/laptop charging — all silent.
Generator becomes backup for AC days + extended cloudy weather only.
Most boondockers run generators 1-2 hours/day max with solar + lithium setup.
What generator manuals + RV stores don't tell you
Under-shared truth #1: 'rated' decibel ratings assume new generator + ideal conditions (concrete floor, no echo). Real-world dB on dirt + reflective surfaces (cliff face, dense forest) can be 5-10 dB higher than rated. A 'whisper-quiet' 55 dB Honda at the campsite next door can sound like 65 dB at your campsite.
Under-shared truth #2: campground generator violations are ENFORCED at NPS + state parks. Rangers patrol + ticket. Yellowstone + Yosemite + Grand Canyon: generator violations = $50-150 fines + potential ejection from campground. Repeat violators banned from future reservations.
Under-shared truth #3: Honda EU2200i carburetors VARNISH SHUT if stored 6+ weeks with fuel. Always run dry before storage, or add Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer. Carburetor rebuild = $80-150 OR new generator + $1,000. Cheapest preventive: $8 bottle of Sta-Bil added at every fill-up.
